Factory tint
« on: February 16, 2009, 12:15:13 AM »
Hey, I am going to tint my front 2 windows and am wondering whats the factory % on the rear of my hardtop for my 00 TJ?  I think its 20% but am not sure. Anyone ever had a meter to determine it?
Thanks, Jeff

Most tint shops will have the gauge.

I had mine tinted...until I was pulled over.

I have to admit, it is much easier to see now that it is off., but the Jeep doesn't look as kewl IMHO.  Don't run doors half the year anyway.

Fair enough on the no doors for the summer.  But I wear glasses with the transitions so my lenses don't cover the side like a strictly sun glasses do.  So I would like it to match my back windows and help with glare.  I had 5% on the front 2 passanger windows of my 99 Dodge Ram, and 5% over the stock 20% on the back and I would never look back at doing it again.  People can't see in to steal your stuff, reduced glare, and it looks better honestly.  I only got pulled over 2 times in over 5 years of having it on the front here in ND.  The legal limit in front is 50% also  :roflol:  So I think 20% is a little compromise, and it will match the back, or so I hear.

Looks like it's a state thing!  In FL it is 30%, at least that's what it was a few years ago when I checked.

Tint laws do change from state to state.  OEM trumps any state laws since that's DOT.  Check out state by stat laws here: http://www.tintcenter.com/laws/

I used to have 5% in the back and it was damn dark.  Dangerous if you're backing up especially in rain since you can't see a thing.  My fronts were 25% which was nice actually.

Currently I have no tint other then what came on the hardtop which is somewhere around 25%.

I doubt that would even help in the rain.

It probably wouldn't... but think about it... if you hit someone, might as well do it in style!

And why not??  I actually mounted it to the swing-out portion just under the spare.  I works great in all weather...only issue today was the back-up of snow crystals on it from running on the trails today...pics coming. :thumb:

Heavy rain compounded by no light?  When my top was 5%, I had to open my door and even then I still couldn't see much.  Streets did not have lamps and the backup lights just lit up teh back of the Jeep.  Now if it was IR, I'd be all over that.

I'll try to take a vid tomorrow of it working...it sees in the dark...I'm not sure how it adjusts so well to different light conditions.
