guage cluster
« on: February 18, 2009, 09:47:49 AM »
my gauge cluster on my 1990 yj has been bombarded with water resulting in the connections corroding away. i know they make a kit so you can install regular gauges but i don't really have the $$$$ right now to spend on gauges and would rather go with a cheaper solution. i came across a gauge cluster from a 1988 yj that is supposedly in good condition... only problem is that its from a 6cyl. anyone know if the gauge cluster is compatible between the 6cyl and the 4banger by chance? i know the 6cly was carb and my 4banger is efi but figured id ask to see if this could be my be my solution.

from looking at what wiring diagrams i could find and then finding the parts catalog it looks like they are the same for 4cyl or 6cyl... aka they are listed as the same part number. so I think ill go for it and hopefully have functional gauges.

how did this work out for you? i have a '99 XJ with the idiot lights, and was wanting to swap out to the gauge cluster.  i've scoured the junkyards, but can't find a 4banger with them.  only 6cyl.  let me know.

um. from looking at the parts cataloge from jeep the gauge cluster had the same part number so i think they are the same.. but the cluster was sold before i got a hold of the seller. that was for a yj though and a xj will be a completely different cluster obviously..

no doubt it'll be different.  like i said though, i was lookin to see if the cluster from a 6cyl would match up to the 4banger for a swap.

I wonder if you had them side by side if there is a jumper or trace that gets cut to make the tack a 4 or 6 cylinder unit??

there might be a pot/trimmer that you adjust to calibrate the tach somewhere inside on the pcb (not talking about the aftermarket newer ones with the switch on the backside)

Just out of curiousity, say I did find a cluster to swap out...The mileage is digital, so I were to swap one out, would it show my actual mileage or would it show the mileage from donor?

anyone know if a gauge cluster from a mpi yj would work in a tbi yj? i know the center gauge on the tib is a clock and on the mpi it has the 4wd light, but other than that would the actually gauges work / have the same range for inputs?

I'm curious as well, I'd rather have the clock

if the connector is the same and has the same pinout

the voltmeter will work
the water temp and oil gauge are dependent on the senders, so if they're the same it will work if not you need the senders (i think the oil pressure sender is different)
the gas tank sender should be the same (i assume) - but if it is different this one is the biggest challenge
the clock needs a permanent 12v which i'm not sure if it's available on the YJ cluster connector
