93 YJ Newbie Question..Engine Noise...
« on: March 24, 2009, 07:02:49 PM »
Just want to say hey to everyone and great job on the forum..I am a new owner of a 93 YJ 2.5 5spd.I got the jeep on a trade..It has 127k on the odo..It has a rattle to it so i got under it and started probing around and found the sound to be in the oil pan..Now my idea is to see if anyone has done this or would know if it would work..I want to drop the pan and try to put bearings in it other than replacing the motor right now..It does have good compression in all cyl.ranging from 140 to 145...So my question is to see if this is possible..And maybe some good advice...Thanks to all...

it can be done it messey. is it a knocking noise or a rattle sound ? if it is a knocking noise you can have it running and pull one plug wire at a time if the noise goes away or gets a lot less it most likey a rod bearing. mine makes a little noise from the timing chain the thing has 150k on it

Yes you can drop the oil pan and change the mains and the rods, I just did this a few months ago but still the noise wont go away. The bearings looked real good that I took out so I dont think the the bearings were the problem. I was also told that all 2.5l motors make this noise. Mine has 104thousand miles on it.
Good luck and It is a messy job but very easy to do.

its not really a knocking noise..more like a rattle noise..the week i bought it i did a complete tune up and oil change it seemed like it got better for about 15 20 min...i work at a bmw shop and the guy i work with said that he would suggest dropping the pan and putting new bearings in..it sucks that its a very common thing but i cant stand when i come to a stop it sounds like a diesel..plus i dont want to be out and it finally give out, thats a big worry of mine..also some more info from you guys would be nice...

oh another thing is my gauge on the dash says im running 70psi on oil pressure...once i drive it for about 30 min. and come to a stop it settles at 40psi but a soon as i get going again it goes right back up....any suggestions...

thanks again

Sounds like your typical AMC 2.5L really.  They are noisy.  They rattle and shake compared to most anything else.  40-70psi is about normal.  Oil pressure will drop when idling it's not constant.

not to hijack the thread but what motors don't do that.... all the ones Ive driven do... (not to call you out.. the oil pressure thing tends to come up allot. and would like to get to the bottom of it lol)

the more info the better..no offense i love my jeep and all but wow..i wish there was a way to get it to stop or quiet down..so if i drop the pan anyways..what should i look for..and is there anything else to do while im in there...and what would be the easiest way to find out if it is the bearings or timing chain or something else..

thanks

You know, now that I read this thread, I am thinking maybe I should replace the bearings as well, since I will be dropping the oil pan to replace the timing chain and tensioner anyway...  Not that I think there is anything wrong with mine, but with 130K miles on the clock, it may be a good idea as far as prevention goes...

Try adding a qt. of ATF to the engine oil and see if the engine quiets down some.

i was always told that adding atf doesnt do anything for the motor except for adding extra detergents..not shooting down ur advice because im up for anything...another thing to say about my jeep is that it does idle a little ruff..even after a full tune up...

thanks again..keep up the good help...

That's why you're adding it.  Works great to quiet noisy lifters, thought it would be worth a shot for you.  Cheap and easy, why not?
