spare tire carrier
« on: May 21, 2009, 04:37:21 AM »
Hey everyone I have a 91 Yj. My Question is with the spare tire carrier, I'm running 33's and last night I took it out for a ride and I't started to bend the hinge out and pop the latch from the bouncing. This is the first time running with the spare on it, fullsize spare that is. Hinges arn't factory, any one running aftermarket bumper/ tire carrier. The factory spare location dosent seem strong enough to support the weight. Any input would be appreciated.

I bought a set of hd fabbed bumpers for 235 off ebay. good quality welds on both sides. Then I found a deal on a swing by four real/daystar thats supp to be for cherokee but it holds a 33(132shipped). I am having the spindle welded thru both sides of bumper when my guy gets gas for his welder. Here is a link to some pics on me myspace so you can kindoff see what I am doing if it helps.

A cheap fix would be to buy some 2" ABS pipe and some longer bolts.  What's happening is your spare is not resting on the tire stops and is shaking.  If left alone it will tear the mount from the tailgate.  You can stop this by extending the rubber stops so the tire doesn't move as much.

Cheap and it works.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm thinking of making my own bumper/ tire carrier. I like Jeff's idea of the spacer for a temporary fix.
