Should I buy 89 wrangler
« on: May 30, 2009, 11:18:08 AM »
Hi all, I'm looking for a little advice. Friend of my daughter is going to away to college and will sell 89 wrangler hardtop 5 speed for $300. Should I jump on it? What issues would make you say no don't buy it at that price?

If it runs and drives yep.
Around here, middle TN, most Jeeps that cheap would be junk though.

Even if it runs I'd be cautious.  Any vehicle, be it Jeep or anything else, at that price means at least another $1500 to get it in decent running shape.  Until you really look at it, though, there's not much that can be said.  I'd say it really comes down to "how much of a hassle will it be, and are you willing to undertake it?"

Does your Daughter wish to still be friends with this person?  If the friend is up front and says the Jeep is fine then I might consider it.  Although if it's a POS and she sells it there will be other problem to deal with.

$300 for a runner is really low.  I would suspect that it has over 150K miles and probably rust.  If the top is original then it's probably worth $300 on it's own.

Same thing I was thinking; the top alone could be sold for that much if it is in any decent condition and it is  an original top...

If something about it is so wrong that you don't want to mess with it you could part it out on ebay and make your money back and then some. Wish I could find a project jeep that runs that cheap.

Exactly! You don't buy a Jeep for that around here. A project Jeep is 1k or more
