Topic: Axles and Diffs

I am somewhat new to the Jeep scene but I love it so far.  I have too many people giving me advice that I haven't asked for so I want to ask the experts some questions.  My Jeep is a '98 2.5L.  Are axles and diffs the same as on the 4.0L or are they smaller versions?  I am sure they are Danas but I don't know the details.  Thanks for your input.

Front is a Dana30 and rear is a Dana35, same as the 4.0L TJ standard axles.  Some TJ's (Saharas and Sports) had an optional Dana44 rear axle.  The TJ Rubicon has front and rear Dana44 axles with lockers.

2.5 is geared different. 2.5 auto is 3.73 stick 4.10   tha 4.0 are either 3.07 or 3.55 I think

Drunkencityworker is mostly right.  I have a '98 TJ 4.0 Sport that came from the factory with 3.73 gears.  I'm upgrading the Dana 35 to a Ford 8.8.  The previous owner destroyed the Dana 35 (no locker) with 35" tires. You can go up to 4.88 ratio with the Dana 30 and 35 if you need more power.

...in 1997 4.0L TJ's came in 3.07 and 3.55 only.  Not until '98 were 3.73:1's available.  Still, a 2.5L will have 4.10/4.11's if it's a manual and 3.73:1 if it's a manual.  The Dana 44 was known as 44-3 Option to the Dealer.  44 as in the axle and 3 as in the 3rd appearance of the D44 in a 'Universal'.  In 1997, the 44-3 was only available with 3.55:1 gears.  In 1998, the 44-3 was available with 3.73:1.  The axles will always have a Trac-lok but no ABS as that was a requirement for the option.  44-3 option was only available with the Sport and Sahara.

Things change with the introduction of the Rubicon and the 2.4L as well.  The best gearing for the Dana 30/ Dana 35c combo has to be the 2004 2.4L with an auto.  They come with 4.56:1 standard but only for that model and just for that year, which makes it a rare bird.

Actually....  I've heard of instances where the 2.5L Auto has had 3.55's and manuals has 3.73's but they were at times when axles were getting scarce since the XJ's always had priority.
