Dana 300 in a YJ
« on: July 03, 2009, 06:57:13 AM »
I want to put a twin stick into my jeep, and I located a D300 out of a 74'-76' jeep. I want to rebuild and and install a twin stick in it. Will this year work with my '92 YJ? I thinking I can pick it up for $60.

If you plan on keeping a driver side front diff you need to get a flip kit for the D300. I would imagine a adapter is also needed, your tranny has a 21 spline output and I think the D300 have a 23 spline input.

Keep an eye out for a D20 out of a early Bronco. They are driver drop. They can be twin sticked as well too. But you still need an adapter.

You need to flip the Dana 300 but you dont need a flip kit (over $500 i believe) - i flipped mine and dual stick it with an AA twin stick kit. Check this thread on my upgrades, it is explained there http://4bangerjp.com/forums/index.php/topic,6984.0.html

You will have an issue with the 21 spline output on the ax5 as the D300 is 23 spline, not sure if there are any cheap options there as i went a different route (and just by looking at the ax5 seems that there is a need for a spacer/adapter)

So it is possible? I've looked for months for a D20 for a resonable price locally, with no luck. If I buy this, it is possible to get it to work? It won't be a total waste of money? I do plan on rebuilding it anyways a few more parts can't hurt.

it is possible - for me it worked with the AA shifter kit - you will need at least shift rails and seals as when you flip it they will be on the bottom of the t-case and most likely the old ones will leak (my rails were rusted on the portion that was outside of the tcase). I went with a transmission from an '02 TJ 6 cyl (NV3550) as that one mates with the d300 with no problems (you only need to elongate 2 holes on the top of the transmission. I will have some more updates this weekend on the installation - i have the shifters booth and front driveshaft installed but didnt have time to take pics yet. There was also a guy that was making a cheap flip kit just by using the shifters - DDMachine was his 'nick on one of the 4x4 sites out there - the only problem with his approach to me was that the pivot point on the shifters was below the shifter rails which would obviously give a lot of throw at the end - i think his kit was about $130 and required very little fabrication or modifications, but you will probably still need new rails to avoid any leaks and these are about $35 each. add the booth and shifter knobs and you end up more expensive than the AA kit which is $160.

sharpxmen after reviewing your thread I am blown away how clean your shop is! what are you working out of an doctors office? Because of you I now have a new goal in life. A super clean garage! Other than that expect a lot of questions about your D300 build. You just did, what I'm about to do, so hopefully you can give me some good advise about the do's and don'ts of a d300 flip!

that's funny - 2 months ago was a mess and i had all my moving boxes all over the garage - i cleaned it when my R&P broke so i can have space to work, i thought it's still messy but hearing you saying that makes me feel goooood

You can ask in my thread, i'll have some updates this weekend, got new driveshafts and cleaned the rust on the frame rails (rusts like crazy under the crossmember) - will post pics soon. Thanks for the praises

well i bought that dana 300, got it home and after looking at it, it turns out to be a Dana 20 ( 6 spline) with passenger side drop, So I thinking I'm screwed! and I just threw away my money! I knew I should have beefed up on my tranfer case identification before buying one on craigslist!

Why are you screwed?    I am running a D20 and have had no problems with it. I thought the input on the D20 was 23 spline.

See if you can come up with some serial numbers. Try on these boards to see if you can find out what it came out of and what year it is.

:brick: I forgot about the Jeep one! I don't know of any flip kits for the D20.
Maybe you can sell it for what you have in it?

Here are some interesting Dana 300 links:

I looking around for one as well.  You can build it up to near Atlas strength for about half the price.  You don't have to get a fancy flip kit, but they are available. The LoMax 4:1 gear set is really sweet (cheaper than a Terra-low).  You can upgrade the gear set later.
95 YJ, 31 BFG ATs, 4.0 TB & spacer, Banks header, DynoMax CAT back, 19# inj, AEM CAI, 20 gal mod, Optima yellow
98 TJ, 35 BFG Krawlers, 4.0 liter, ax15, atlas 5:1, armor, Super 88 (under construction)
96 XJ Cheep Cherokee, 33s, 4.0 liter, AW4, future project
89 Waggy, 360 V8 727 dana 44s, it runs

Well the guy was advertising a I6 258 w/manual 3 speed w/dana 300, I only wanted the d300 and he wouldn't seperate them so he knocked the price down to $120. Great price but I didn't want the engine or tranny. So I posted it on a local board up here in pittsburgh, and me and another fellow went in halfs. he took engine and tranny, and i took the d300. He took the whole thing with him and seperated it at his house and I picked it up several weeks later. So i'm only in for $60. I feel real bad because the guy thought he was buying a 258 and when he ran the numbers it turned out to be a 232, and is useless to him. :brick: Live and learn
