Are 4Banger Owners Smarter?
« on: December 28, 2005, 10:58:53 PM »
I browse several other forums and see a lot of really basic questions.  What are track bars, swaybars, how do I open the door, etc...  I haven't seen any of those questions asked here.  So what's up?

I do my research....

I don't know if we are necessarily smarter but we just like different things than those 4.0L junkies. LOL!

No, I like my 4 banger and once I build it I will like the uniqueness of it being small and pwoerful and still get better mileage.  :D

I doubt many of us here or those that make it here haven't been to the others first.

My forum education was like this.

Pirate4x4.com
jeepforums.com
jeepaholics.com
jeepsunlimited.com
texas4x4.org
forums.stx4wd.com
links4jeeps.com

and finally somewhere after that I found 4bangerJP.com

So ithink we got all those questions out of us.

I still haven't found those track bar thingys on my YJ. then there is this mythical sway bar thingy people keep talking about.

Yea, I started on Jeepsunlimited as well. I found this forum searching for ANYTHING on the 4 banger performance. My Google search came up with this place. Most people that I talk to have never seen this site. I enjoy introducing them to the "mythical" performance that can be acheived in the little motors. Most people think if you have a 4cyl in a Jeep the only way to get any power is to do a engine swap. I don't agree with that. Never did, and never will. I love the little motors, I guess cause they have something to prove to the big boys and they are like a sleeper Hot Rod.  8)

I too have ventured to 'those other site's'.  What's kept me here is the technical aspect of this site.  Jeffy is an extremely smart guy, and his surrounding posse are equally intelligent.

How's that for A## kissing??

I honestly got soo tired of those other site for one simple reason.  The burning question:
What's the best ________?  Locker/Axle/Suspension/lights/etc.

That question burns me up.  It starts wars, flaming people or parts online.  I finally get to use something I read in a letter section of an offroad magazine.  You all may use it since it didn't intially come from me...

Asking me what's the best _____, is like asking me to tell you your favorite flavor ice cream.

That hit it right on the head!!

So back to the reason I'm here...   I like the attitudes here.  I like the politeness of you all.  I like not being blasted for my own thoughts...

Jeffy, I still have 'opening the door' issues, but I'll save that question (which way do I pull?) for the Pirate boards!!  ;)

I'm on several forums but I only starting reposting to a few of them.  Jeepforums.com is the most recent one that I rejoined.  Seems have a lot of new people there with many basic questions.  There are some who are more technical and then there are many who follow the crowd.  Don't ever talk bad about the 8.8 or lockright.     Own a 2.5L and you'll get little help.  Everyone's going to jump on you and say to swap it.  I don't like how TJ's and YJ's are seperated though.  There is a lot of similar questions asked in each.

Then there's Jeepaholics.com.  I know the owner so I helped him out by answering tech questions.  Answered so many that I held the highest poster slot till people started thinking that higher post counts mean something.  Still, there is a family atmosphere there.  Some may even remember 4bangers was hosted there for a while.

I joined jeepsunlimited a long time ago.  I used to talk with the owner on Jeep-L but haven't heard from him in ages.  It's a big forum with a lot of people.  Not much tech goes through there.  If you want a groupbuy or want to sell something, go there.

I've also joined Quadratech's forums.  There ok but again a lot of basic questions.  Since it's a store owned forum, people will jump on you for recommending another store.  I stopped posting there.

Then there's Pirates.  If you are new to Jeeps, stay far away from there.  There is a lot of tech but you have to wade through all the crap.  Lots of sheep with a few really smart guy's.  Finding the good threads can be difficult though.

Then there are some mailing lists that I've been a member of at one time or another.  Jeep-L was the first.  I haven't been there in a while but some of the old timers are still there.  Met a lot of Jeepers there too.

Then there was Jeep-Tech.  That was spun off from Jeep-L since some people didn't want to hear the every day stuff and only wanted tech.  Kind of boring there actually.

So, you can probably see what shaped this forum.  It's got tech but it also has some more general stuff.  Since the world doesn't revolve around Jeep or actually DC, there is a lot of OT stuff about cars.  It's interesting to see what's happening in other area's.  But I don't mind basic questions either which is why I asked the question.  I just haven't seen any really basic questions asked.

Oh and as for doors, I only recently noticed that the door padels on the TJ are on backwards compared to the CJ and TJ.  I had never noticed it until recently.

I came over here after seeing a post on Pirate.
I have not posted much because there seem to be some very smart people over here who answer questions quicly, aka Jeffy.
I joined my wheeling club here in PA about 2 years ago. Before then, anything with a 6 cyl engine was the minimum. Now after 2 years everyone is talking about smaller engines.
I know a lot about suspensions and axles, and I am collecting the knowlege on engines and trannys. Someday I may build my 4cyl with the info I have collected here.
Right now my 4cyl backed by a auto tranny keeps up with everyone on anything but pavement.

Yeah, the site is growing by word of mouth only.  I don't promote it since I don't want to go onto someone elses site and steel their traffic.

Feel free to ask or answer any questions.  I'm sure there is stuff that someone forgot to mention or ask.  I don't get everything right so don't let that stop you.

I started on jeepforum, but got frustrated just a few months later. I don't learn many new things over there anymore, because its filled with non-tech posts. I spend as much time on pirate as possible, and have for quite a while now. learned more useful stuff there than I did in college.

I'm trying to bring the quotient down with my very noob questions....but hey, just trying to learn and have a kick ass Jeep.

Came over here after someone mentioned it on the 4wd.com forum.

While I've only been going to the various forums for a couple of weeks, I think I'm settled in right here.  Too many posts on the other forums bashing the 4 banger with comments like, "stop trying to improve the performance of that piece of crap and just rip out the engine and replace with the I-6."

I want mine to perform as well as possible, but at least I'm realistic about what I'm using it for....driving back to forth from work (6 miles each way in stop and go traffic) and the occasional off-road runs....no towing, don't plan on using the AC in the summertime....putzing around.
2009 Audi S5....what....its 4wd...sort of....

my guess is that you got a yj, because if you got a tj then just one word can describe it "WOW".  You really just gave jeep owners a bad name.
