Exhaust options

Ok guys, you've all probably been there...exhaust is getting a bit 'worn' from the trail, and is just downright annoying on the street for me.  I've gotta replace the entire thing (cat included.)  So after doing some research and asking around, I've come up with three or four options.

1. Fully custom shop work
2. Dynomax catback with cat-co or stock cat
3. Gibson cat-back (again with stocker cat) (fits the style...)
4. Flomaster muffler with custom bent tailpipe

So i need some help making my decision.  I've seen the tail pipe ran inbetween the frame and rear leaf...and i like that style, but i worry about damage from the suspension.  My manifold is in GREAT shape, so i have no need to replace it, as is my headpipe.  Just the cat and everything after.

Well, I went with Borla after the the second time the exhaust failed.  The Second time was with a Flowmaster.  I've had my Borla fail but it's Borla sends me a new one and I send them back the old one.  Oh speaking od this, I prefer bolt-on catbacks.  The clamps allow me to adjust and remove parts easily.  This is a nice feature if you're on the road or trail and damage it to the point where it has to be removed.  Then later you'd be able to put it back together yourself.

Performance over the Flowmaster and stock was noticable.

Only Cj's have the tail pipe sticking through the leaf spring.  The moved it for two reasons.  One, it would send exhaust fumes into the passenger compartment.  Two, it got damaged.  Only a custom bend would put the exhaust there.  Also, if you have a YJ, you might want to consider getting a new downpipe.  The stock one is pretty restrictive and hangs rather low.  Having it rerouted infront of the oil pan will allow it to be tucked up higher.  It will also get rid of the kinks in the pipe.  I think the pipe is around 1.75-2" rather then 2.25"

Here are some other things to consider.  Get a all stainless steel exhaust.  (I think this leaves out Flowmaster since their only protection is aluminized paint.)  Mandral bends are smooth and do not reduce in size.  Straighter is better.  Less turbulance will allow for the exhaust to move quickly without creating any hotspots.  Get a good warranty.  Exhausts aren't bulletproof.  You'll probably end up breaking it for one reason or another.  Pay once now so you won't have to pay a lot later on.  Forget about loud exhausts.  Loud exhausts don't necessarly make power.  If you plan on doing long trips or use it as a daily driver, the droning from a loud exhaust will get to you.  If the exhaust is too free flowing, you'll lose your low and mid's in the torque band.  You'll gain higher HP's that will only come into play higher speeds.

Yea!

I'm running a Gibson Cat-Back and I like the sound.  Flowmasters are just too darn loud.  Cool for a week or two, but then a bit obnoxious.

As far as custom work.  Most exhaust systems are bolt-on so depending on your mechanical skills you may not need to take it to a shop.  But...  The way the exhaust was routed out of the manifold (in my case) was really crappy.  I had a shop custom route it in front of the oil pan.  For some reason, underneath the oil pan was the direction Pacesetter chose to put it.

So my vote is: Gibson or Borla, yes stainless steel.  If your having a shop install it, spend a few extra bucks there and get it as up and out of the way as you can.

Jeffy,
Thanks.  It is mainly a DD and I know ALL about the drone (currently just a turndown off of a dynamax muffler and a well worn cat....yea it drones      )

The gibson has the exit style i like (out the side of the spring) and a decent price as well.  Is it a stainless??

The custom route would be a total exhaust re-do.  Which i'm fine with, if it fits what i want in the end.  I'm looking into a new headpipe as I plan on a bellyup skid in the future.  I like the idea of it being bolt on, as the trail will eventually get to it.
I will not do borla.  Been there done that on my other vehicles...hated it totally on everything but the warranty...

Hmm, I like my Borla.  Works well with the 2.5L.  Check out Banks if you don't want to go Borla.

Its certainly not the quality...because borla has that.  I was just not a fan of the sound.  I was unaware that banks made a cat-back...awesome!   8)  I'll look into it.

SMC, do you have any pics or a sound clip of that gibson??

The Borla is pretty quiet and sounds alrigth on a 2.5L.  Actually I made a mp3 for a fellow 4banger so he could hear what it sounded like.  It's a lot lower then a Flowmater.  Probably quieter then a Gibson too.  The Borla is almost a straight pipe though.  You can see straight through it easily.

You can find a sound bite right here

Just scroll down some.  I listened to it, and it doesn't really do justice.
Banks has come out with a pretty awesome kit. Well worth looking into.

Anybody know if Borla (preferably) or anybody else makes a full exhaust system in stainless steel fo a YJ - or if the 97-99 system I found on Summit can be made to fit w/o a huge pain in the butt?  I'll be headed down to VI in a couple years and Caribbean Islands turn metal to sand pretty quick with all the sea water and salt flying around.  I see a glass body in the future too.
