Turning yj over tomorrow to cage guy. Need to find some sort of rubber sheet or matt to put between rockers and body. Any ideas and rust is an issue in chicago

I'm assuming your looking to keep crap from getting trapped and causeing rust, best solutions I've seen is to coat the inside of the rockers w/ bedliner/undercoating to give it the rubberized effect, can also do the tube where the rockers cover.  I've also seen people use caulking, just make sure to get the stuff that stays flexiable, and run bead around the outer edges to seal it up.

If you run a sheet of rubber there is still a good chance of getting crap caught between the rubber and the tub.

I lined mine with Line-X and used Tough Stuff rocker guard paint protector between the rockers and the rocker guards.

urethane sealant - it's like the windshield one but a little more flexible, use some on the perimeter, put some painting tape 1/8'' away from where the top of the rocker will end as well as the rocker face aligned with the top edge, once you bolt the rocker on wipe the excess nicely and remove the tape right away (don't let it dry). but if you want to take them off it could get some paint with it, sticks really well but there will be no water going in - if you use it, put a  little bead all around and also around the bolt holes

You can also buy undercoating in a rattle can if you're on a budget.  Works pretty good.

Just don't use silicone because it causes rust.  Better to use a latex sealer or something else.  I really don't think anything is needed.  For example, the fender flares don't come from the factory with anything between them and the body, and dust gets trapped in there too.  I just made sure the holes got a shot of primer to keep the edges from rusting.

Clear silicone is Acetic acid cure.  That's what leaks out of it and why it smells like vinegar.  If you use it on two finished surfaces it should be fine.  Really though, you want to use RTV Silicone or Urethane sealant.  RTV is acetoxy cure.  I believe urethane sealant is also acetoxy cure.

our 06 tj rubicon  had the fender flares eat through the paint and down to the primer in after owning it for 3 weeks... new fender flares have a lower top line so now you can see nice white marks where the original flares eat into the paint...  :brick:

the 2pieces of metal from grinding into eacother and knocking paint off leading to rust. well thats my theory . does it make sense

Maybe just use some rubber or teflon washers between body and rocker guard.  That would minimize the contact on the body and even allow dust and mud to be washed out easier.

A rubber mat will also trap grit and dust.  The grit and dust will trap moisture.  Seal it off properly and it won't rust.
