Topic: new radio install - distributor noise on Radio

Hello all

Made a post a few months ago about jeep radio install.  Job went relatively fine.  My fuse box did not have a 12V costant for the yellow wire because when i disconnected the old wiring, i forgot to undo battery.  yellow wire (hot all time) sparked.  Since then, no constant 12V in interior fuse box (clock was the nomenclature).  Not sure why it doesnt work.  Is there something i did?  Main fuses in Engine Bay are all good.

So that brings me to next problem.  I decided to run hot wire straight to batter, thru fireway behind heater core.  easy job.  since then i have Distributor Noise on my radio.  Nohting on Blue Tooth or CDs.  Just on radio. 

ANY solutions to this?  Fix the fusebox somehow? or any other solutions on the battery hot wire setup?

Check for a secondary fuse box. On my '01 it is behind the glove box.

As for the noise the first thing to do is check that the ground is well connected to the chassis. There are noise eliminators available at Radio Shack or Parts Express (www.parts-express.com) that typically go in-line on the ground wire. That should take care of the noise.

I agree that the noise is coming from a bad ground.  Did you use the ground of the old radio or installed a new one?  I always recommend installing a new ground when installing an aftermarket head unit...  And I also concur that the fuse could be in the secondary fuse box inside the cab (mine is above the clutch pedal - ´94).  If you need any help, let me know; I know a thing or two about this subject...  (I work for Sony and was in charge of their Audio line for almost 8 years).

usually all the radios and auto cd players/cassette players come with an inductive filter that would be mounted inline on the 12v feed - did your's came with one of those? the purpose is to "filter" out the spikes in the voltage, not sure if that would fix your problem but would definitely help.

A bad ground would still cause the noise even with this filter...

Few things, Bad ground wire, then your alternator could be making the noise. In my past thats what it always was. Either add a Fair-right (how ever your spell it) an inductive type clamp to dampen the noise. or replace the alternator. Thats my past experience

Well, since your original harness was cut to pieces and the old radio was stolen, I'd guess it's a bad ground.  All of the wires you need for the stereo should be in the harness behind the dash someplace.

If you shorted out the wiring you most likely blew a fuse.  I'd guess it was in the power distribution box since that's where the radio/horn/lights are fused.

To answer some of the questions, all my stuff is rewired, not using existing Jeep radio harness.  it was rewired with the last radio that was installed (by me and worked fine).  the ground wire comes out of the new radio harness, it is soldered and goes to the same point my last radio ground.  However, the Radio Chassis does Not have a groud, will trying to put that in this weekend.

There is no inline noise filer on the power wire.  My understanding was modern HUs have that inside the guts. 

For the small fuse panel above the clutch, the hot wire that i shorted had no fuse link in it.  it had a tab and went into a spot called "clock".  Since that time, that is no longer constant 12V hot.  I have tried to following wiring diagrams to trace where that CLOCK goes (online pics), in order to see if I blew a fuse in the Power Distribution Block under the hood.  I havent pulled ALL the fuses in there, they are kinda big and not sure how to do it (sad i know).  Lighter still works so do headlights and all that.  from what i can see, the big fuse links do not LOOK blown, but hard to see full detail.  any idea what fuse to look for in the block?  GOTTA be a fuse on that CLOCK SOMEWHERE RIGHT?  that fuse is a secondary issue i just wanna clear up.

what year is your jeep? and is it a wrangler?

1-2uF non-polarized capacitor between ground and power. Try at the battery, at the radio, and both, and see which works better. You can also try caps on both the ground and power to chassis. Ground to chassis is electrically not quite at the same potential except where they meet so sometimes this helps, esp if you have bad solder joint somewhere or poor grounds.

This can also be used on your fuel pump if it is inducing noise in your CB.

I would start by using a new ground; if that does not help, I would look to a filter, but in my opinion, I think the ground will fix it.

since you have a '95 go ahead and download the FSM from the FAQ section - all the wiring is there - personally i would've had a hard time splicing into my ECU harness w/o it, it gives you all the fuses, locations wire colors and gauges.

update

ok, grounded the case and grounded the radio ground wire. the noise is is slightly slightly better. not much. i have to buy a noise filter OR go back to my original source feed. nothing was diff from my last install except the source. that is why i have the noise. sucks. i have tried to fix why the fuse panel doesnt have constant 12V. all fuses in Power Dist box are legit. all fuses are legit in small fuse box. what is left to get that constant working?

the noise filter is my only other solution. ground is all good.
