Issues with PD Ignition install
« on: October 21, 2009, 10:28:37 AM »
Why does this always seem to happen to me  :brick:

Got the kit, everything looks real nice.
Gapped my new plugs to .065. Installed them.
Removed OE coil and replaced with the PD unit.
Removed OE cap and rotor, replaced with PD stuff.
Hooked up new PD wires (these things are huge)
Made sure all connections are hooked up on coil including power wire and coil wire.
Tryed to start and nothing but the starter cranking.
Double checked my Haynes manual on the wire layout and found that I had not wired the Dist cap correctly. Swapped them around.
Tried to start...nope.
I called PD. They suggested swapping the coil for the stock one. Swapped coils and used the OE coil wire. NOPE nothing. Swapped the cap and rotor or the old stuff. NOPE.
Called PD this morning and they don't know what it could be.
Called a Jeeper buddy who has his own repair buisness and he suggest checking the Auto Shutdown relay in the fuse box by the battery. This checked out.

Any ideas?

Have you used a multimeter to check for power to the coil?

Nope, I don't have one  :uhoh:
What would stop power coming to the coil? I checked the wiring that clips onto the coil. And I checked the one that comes off the dist. Everything looks good.

Time to buy one.

I'll have to find the YJ wiring diagram, but normally there will be the ASD relay and probabally a fusable link.  How did you test the asd relay without a multimeter?

I assume you wired each plug to the correct connector on the cap, right?  I found that the Haynes (or was it the Chilton?) was not so easy to read...  I connected them wrong once, and of course it did not fire.

Did you check the cam sensor connector to make sure you did not accidentally disconnect it while working on the distributor?

ASD is the one powering the coil and the injectors. the same activation and 12v feed circuit but a different relay for your fuel pump - so if you hear the pump it means you have power going to the relay. i suggest you download the YJ/XJ service manual from the FAQ section, imo haynes manual for YJ is quite bad as it covers a lot of years and i found it to be missing quite a bit of details (the fuel injection system is one of them).

I pulled the relay and used a test light to check to see if the relay was getting power. Then I pulled the horn relay and swapped it. All those relays have the same P/N.

Scott use your test light to see if there is power to the coil when you crank it, another test is to see with a noid light on one of the injector plugs. Then crank it see if the noid light flickers, meaning that everything but the coil works.
Also know the old adage if it works don't fudge with it

Ya, I hear ya. It seems like I break everything that is not broke!

I put a spark plug in the coil wire and touched it to the motor mount, then cranked it. Nothing.
I pulled the 40a fuse for the ignition system and it was fine.
Somehow power to the coil has stopped. I have looked all over that side of the motor for something out of place. Everything checks out.

Might want to borrow a meter and check continuity on the 2nd wire to the coil.  The one that goes to a pin on the PCM

My buddy is on his way over.
I was hoping to have found a simple thing that I overlooked. I can't see how I jacked up the wires but you never know.

do you hear the fuel pump? pay attention to that as it will tell you if your relays are activated by the PCM or not (fuel pump relay and ASD are both activated by the same circuit).

and did you check the power to the coil while cranking? (not spark, just power) - aw1234 suggested to use your check light for that which would work just fine.

I'd like to thank everyone for there suggestions to fix this issue. It's a shame you can't fix stupid!  :fish:This was mostly my doings to mess this up.

The things I learned from this

1. Don't install the plug wires backwards. The PD wires have "coil" printed on the boot that goes on the coil. The contacts in the wire never made contact with the spark plug. Guess what...no spark! (guess who didn't see the printing on the boot) :raisehand:
2. Don't look in a Haynes manual for the correct placement for the wires on the dist. My book was WRONG!
3. Testing the spark from a coil should not be done by yourself. It is impossible to tell if your getting a spark!

That is all carry on.

I think I am going to hold off working on my Jeep for a while. It seems everything I touch lately gets worse when I try to fix it!  :baby:

that was hilarious

what Jeffy said, get the service manuals while they're available, haynes sucks big time, i wasted my money on it and it went in the trash after i got frustrated. Thanks to this site and the FSM i downloaded from the faq section I now can find any wire by color and gauge, try that with the haynes for YJ.
