Mine nearly sprays fuel on the ground at idle,
the trademark YJ black tailpipe is the result....

Every one I wheel with has the same symptom.

Run too rich/fat at idle.

Most YJ's run really fat at idle
Huh?

I think he meant when the engine is cold, once at op temp they target 14.7AFR which is not rich at all - but so are all the other engines though, needs rich mixture when cold (and also right after startup there's no O2 info either until the sensor warms up).

that's condensation on the exhaust pipe most likely, would backfire if you had fuel dripping out. Jeeps won't grey out the tailpipe unless you are lean, as long as you pass smog your rig is operating within parameters - here (in BC, Canada) you get a printout comparing your vehicle's emissions with the average for all vehicles tested that were built in the same year, mine is right about where the avg is (they are showing min and max as well) and that includes cruising and idle measurements (not sure how the smog is performed south of the border but here they have something that resembles a dyno and they put the vehicle thru a test that resembles idling and driving starting from a full stop up to 55mph if i remember correctly).

down here there is no real emissions inspection for cars built prior to 96 model year, or obd2 to be more exact.  we dont even have inspection stickers any more in nc.  all they do for the obd2 cars and trucks is plug it in and make sure the emissions components are installed and functioning.

There you go, running rich I understand. Running fat? not so much.

Hey, another North Carolinian! Yeah, they did away with the stickers last year -- it's all computerized now. If a cop pulls you over he can know immediately whether your inspection is good or not before he even steps out of the car. I'm glad my Heep passes :uhoh:

Yes sir!  That and when your registration expires if its not inspected you cant renew it!!!  at least thats the plan cause my jeep and tdi are not inspected but I will get it done just before the registration expires.

You just are not hanging around enough racers... :)

Fat comes over the radio better than rich and its a old motocross term.

Later.

Well I've been racing (Cre Chiefing) since 1979 Started out Drag racng then motorcross, then road racing and dirt track, Karting, Mini Hydroplanes and even crewed on a Pylon racer... And as far as I can remember we always used fat for a rich mixture...

Maybe its a Pacific Northwest thing? no clue...
Ya do gotta be careful, one of my spotters used the term "she's a poorly running fat pig"
and the weight challenged spectator in front of him punched him in the nads....  :yikes:
