SYE and drive shaft?

How difficult is it to install a SYE?

Also how do I measure to find out what new drive shaft lenght I will need?

I know tom woods for the shaft, but whats a good SYE? For a 97TJ.

You would measure from center U-joint to center U-joint on each yoke, SYE isnt very difficult just follow the directions and its pretty simple.

also, if you were gonna order the driveshaft directly from tom woods it also has a page on their site that will tell you how to measure for the new shaft.

Cheaper to get an XJ shaft and have a driveline shop rebuild/shorten it. Cost me $200 and was done with spicer CV/joints.

Tom Woods is good as long as he's not going fishing or makes other plans.  There are a lot better driveshafts out there a well.  Any local place should be able to help you since they're used to making custom shafts.  Then if there is trouble, you can take it back and complain in person.

Do not forget the added cost of adjustable upper control arms because you will need to point the pinion upward straight at the transfer case output. 

A SYE is not hard to install, hell I do dozens a year, almost anybody can do it with the correct tools.  Get a good pair of lockring pliers, the ends look like duckbills and are knurled. 

Having a TJ or XJ front driveshaft shortened locally is a good option, runs about $65 here to have it shortened and balanced.  Once the pinion is pointed up at the output yoke, measure center of ujoint to center of ujoint on the two yokes.

Exactly, the place local to me is awesome at what they do and the service is top notch. No shipping and no waiting.

I bought a used zj front shaft with new ujoints for $40 on CL. $74 to shorten. Oriellys carries basterd joint. 1310 to 1330 for my 8.8 in rear. Think it was $11-$13

I've heard 'em called jumper joint, combination joint, but that my friend is a first for me.

You have obviously never broke one of them out in the middle of nowhere, gone to the store, with the measurements you thought you needed, driven back to BFE tried to install it and 1/2 of it did not fit.....  :brick: #&$^%#$^ Bastard!    LOL I now insist on matching yokes...

The instructions that come with most sye's should be sufficient. My teraflex kit came with a good how to. You may, however, decide whether you want to work on it with transfer case on the jeep, or take it out and work on a bench. WIth my big lift it was easy to just sit straight up and work on it under the jeep without having to take it off.
