The antenna should be low enough that it's not going to be hitting everything but high enough so the tip clears the top.  4-6" above the highest point is what you usually end up with.

I run mine on one of those; personally, I like it, but the antenna DOES stick up there, so you'll hit it when you drive in garages and such.  I use a quick release mount, and ussually keep the antena in the cab until I need it, then I install it (takes all of 2 seconds).

Theoretically, the higher the antenna, the most you'll get out of the CB, but you also hit more stuff...  So you need a balance (use Jeffy's figures, they are a good point).

I removed my tire stop and have the L bracket bolted to the same spot.  it doesn't look the greatest but it gets the job done and has sat there for years.  Still, my 4.5' whip gets beat on occasionally with trees and the occasional parking structure support beam.  My 49" 2M gets more of a beating since it's taller and mounted higher.  It's bracket was attacked just above the stock taillights which are gone now.  If I had to do over again, I'd lower it several inches.

I have a tail light mount, so I took the cable, and went into the body from under the light through the light hole (the mount is open on the bottom, so you can do this without squishing the cable).  From there, a hole onside the top on the rear behind the wheelwell, and up into the tub.  From there, I mirrored the cable routing found for the stock wiring on the driver side all teh way under the dash.

This is the type of mount I run (it has a quick disconnect so I take the antenna off in the city - notice the gap between the body and the taillight that the mount creates; since there is no metal on the bottom, you can route the cable in that way):

Here you can see (sort of!) the cable routing and how it goes into the tail light hole in the tub:

Although you cannot see it in the pic, this is where the cable comes into the tub...

Mine is following the tail light harness.  The cables go along the driver side harness to the back of the Jeep then into the large grommet on the wheelwell.  Then either out through the taillight hole.

thanks for the pics... sounds like i should get myself one of those taillight mounts because otherwise i have to come up from under the body or make my own spacer between the light and the body to create the gap...

If you're getting one, I recommend the one on the driver side instead of the passanger side like I have; trees tend to be lower on the passanger side (this would be the closest to the curb).

I had that same mount (Teraflex) originally...mounted it on the driver's side and just ran the cable between the rear window and the door.

Now it is mounted as part of my swing out tire carrier on the rear bumper...I just run the cable under the rear door (under the body) and up the passenger side like Felipe has his...boy the Jeep was clean back then.
