Stupid Jeep, Part XIV
« on: January 19, 2010, 07:12:06 PM »
Turning into my street after driving back from MK and the Jeep is making a lovely sqeek as I push in the clutch to downshift....pull into the garage to a lovely smell. Open the hood and the radiator is spouting and smoking a little...WTF??

I wonder if my fan is slipping??  Temp gauge didn't move as far as I could remember.

Going to wait until it has time to cool down and start it up with the hood up to see what I see.

And coolant level was fine....WTF?

Coolant levels seem fine...started the engine...fairly noisy squeal when I press in the clutch pedal...thoughts??  Safe to drive??

Just park it outside and leave it running. Put a bill of sale with your signature on the dash and I'll be by to pick it up.....

Its the weather....Jeeps don't like to be all tidy-up with the full tops and garb on. You need to relocated to the south during the cold months....

Check the thermo. Pull it and run without it for a day or two. Block off the radiator to give you heat capabilities and engine operations. If everything is good, then put another in thermo and test that for a few days. If it happens again, yah, check the fan. I had my fan give a leak (??) when I went to the mountains in CO in Sept. I bought a replacement fan for in case. Still haven't replaced it.

most likely the 2 are unrelated.

in the order of likelyness,
the squeek can be the t/o bearing in friction with the guide around the input shaft or your pressure plate.

there is also the fork that presses the t/o bearing forward, that can also squeek (at the contact points with the bearing).

if your slave pushrod or your opposite rest in the bellhousing have lost the plastic covers those can squeek too (sorry, dunno what they're made of or what they're called but i hope you know what i am referring to)

all these (except for the pressure plate) usually have a light coat of grease, if that ran out, dried or washed out could cause the annoying sounds you're hearing.

Being part of a Jeep club is the best...three people jumped up to haul it over to the mechanic...then a mechanic in the club jumped in and said he would pick up and fix at his shop for a few hundred bucks....will be fixed by this weekend.

Clutch?..okay, but just about due...

Throwout bearing??  Toast...took out the fingers on the pressure plate.

Radiator??  Toast...

Rear axle seals?  Toast....

Wtf??  Is this like one of those "it only happens in threes" scenarios??

So my Jeep club buddy worked on it yesterday.

Clutch replaced, radiator replaced, tires removed, repaired and balanced (3 of them were leaking real bad).

Axle seals fixed...were rusting and we can't figure out why unless that happened when they were sitting a year before I installed??

Today he is modifying the rear brakes...moving the mounting bracket.  Actually going to try to continue with the Caddy calipers with new thinner discs.  He seems to think they will work fine...we'll see.  Less than $100 to try this route, so I'll give it a shot.

Picking up tonight!
