how's this for a donor?
« on: January 24, 2010, 10:41:51 PM »
i've got a 91 yj 4 banger. i need power. my dad is getting rid of his 99 tahoe soon and upgrading to a toyota seqouia. would the tahoe be worth snagging as a donor vehicle for an engine swap? it's a 5.7L automatic with 180,000 miles. the trans only has about 80k miles as it got replaced at 100k. i wanna keep my jeep a stick, but as for doing a purely engine swap and grabbing a junkyard gm stick to put behind it, how much hell am i looking at? am i gonna be asking myself "why did i do this?"

any help would be much appreciated...

Nice motor...dont see too many stick gm trucks in yards by me for trans...In my opinion I would stay away from obd2 motors. But then I dont really know what I am doing either. Good aftermarket for motor. Just trans and wiring would worry me

the engine and trans are one thing and would gain  the power you want but you must realize that if you upgrade to a engine that size and power the extra weight you bring on you jeep and would recommend building you jeep up to support the extra power aka axles drives shafts. maybe even extra bracing for the frame.

would be a shame to put all that work in to in then blow out everything around it!

most people I see do v8 swaps go to min 8.8's or 9 inch rear diff and 44 and up for front and build the jeep to support it all. other then that it ends up a pile of rubble withing a year or two.

If you decide to go with that engine and you want to stay with a stick shift, you should try looking for an AX-15 and rebuild it with upgraded internals. That should definitely handle V8 power.

I would highly recommend sticking with the mated transmission then to swap it out.  Then all you'd need to do is match the splines on the transfer case which will be a pass-drop NVG242 or 241 most likely.  Actually it will probably be the ones with the solenoids for push button shifting.

The GM transfer cases mount with 5 studs, the Jeep has 6.  Otherwise the 27spline GM input shafts will swap into the 231j so he can use the stock transfer case, but with that kind of horsepower you would want to upgrade to a 6-gear planetary and wide chain kit.  A lot would be determined by what side drop you need the transfer case.

i'm not sure which side it drops on, but it is a push button selector for the t-case.

Drivers side drop, GM made the switch around 88-89.
