Vertical mount stereo in console?
« on: February 03, 2010, 01:54:57 PM »
Anybody have this?  I installed the security console 3 weeks ago and have gone through 2 brand new Kenwood cd players since.  They would work fine for a short time and go "dead".  I emailed Crutchfield and asked them which stereo would work best and they replied the NONE of the stereos would work while mounted vertically.  I know others have this same console but which stereo/cd works when mounted vertically?

Thanks

Maybe something meant for marine use.  They tend to be more forgiving.

They're saying that because they don't have an answer or it's a manufacturer disclaimer. I've seen it done with many CD players with no ill effects.

I have done it as well.  The only thing I did was add some weatherstripping to get a tighter seal and give the cd player some cushion

Well, the problem is you beat on the lasers drive motor and the plastic drive screws since they're not designed to take much force on that plane.  That's crucial since the laser needs to stay aligned with the disc.

Some receivers are more robust but as CD's are dying off, they quality is going to drop a bit.  My old Alpine was the preferred unit for boats and it still works, although I now only use it for my FM Modulator.

Honestly, I'd consider a receiver with flash memory or capable of reading a USB/Aux input or iPod controller.  They are relatively inexpensive compared to what they used to cost.

Jeffy,

The Kenwood unit I have does have the USB/Aux input, unfortunately I have killed 2 units trying to play a cd.  I may stick with the Kenwood unit again and just not play cd's in it.

My Alpine plays fine in the horizontal position and rarely skips unless I hit something hard.  whoopdeedoo's didn't bother it.

No reason for CD's in this day and age.  Hell, if you run just an amp and speaker you can hook up your MP3 player of choice directly to the amp.

I think I'll do this when I'm ready to upgrade. My Alpine is real old. It's eating my cassettes  :wall: I know :stfu: So I might have to break down and get a ipod. Not in a big hurry.

Old cherokee radios are $5 at the junkyard and pin compatible.  No need for fancy security consoles because nobody in their right mind would steal one ;)
