I have a knock or banging noise
« on: February 11, 2010, 09:37:01 PM »
I have a knock or a banging noise coming from the rear of my jeep.  It does it when you make a sharp turn to either side or when you hit a pot hole. It does it more when I turn to the right more like turning into a driveway.

Things I have done to try and fix it.

1. Changed all for shocks
2. Replaced the rubber tail pipe insulators

what year and/or model is your Jeep?

EDIT: found you in the "introduce yourself here" thread
so since you have a YJ - look at the leaf spring bushings, shackle and leaf bolts. also (and depending if you have a lift or not and what type) look at the leafs and the teflon pads between them - if you lost one it could make noise when the leafs are flexing. there are also the braces that keep the leafs together, some are wrap-around and make noise when they are moving along the top leaf, not much you can do in that case. another thing to look for is lose bolts on the track bar, bad bushings or even worn sleeve on the track bar bushing - this happened to me at the front axle and was making a bang exactly like you described when turning into a driveway (or a sudden turn if you wish). hope this helps, keep us posted.

My guess it's the trackbar but that's a guess seeing as we don't know what your driving.

Just climbed under the jeep with a flash light didn't see anything missing on the leaf springs. looked at the trackbar gave it a good push and pull didn't seem to move or anything, not sure it would have moved anyway. The noise only gets worse when it rains and the temp drops in San Diego.

I'd just go ahead and remove the rear trackbar while you're there.  It doesn't have to be loose enough for you to move it to make noise or move.  A lot of force is put on the trackbar especially when the suspension moves.

Keep the suspension from moving around too much.

I'd just remove it completely.  No need to replace it.  Then you can enjoy a softer suspension.

+1 My trackbar has been gone since 1995. (1994 YJ) I found it had bad characteristics when driving on curves with washboards, its handles way better without it...

I did break a leaf once in a rear spring and it made a popping banning noise in some turns...

When my Jeep had aluminum angle shims it would make loud popping and cracking sounds.  Several people asked me if something had snapped but it was "normal" for my Jeep at the time.  When I put in steel shims, the noises went away.  In your case, if the springs are stock, you might still get noises if the u-bolts for the leaf springs are not torqued right.  Just something to check anyway.

When I changed my suspension, the U bolts would cause a popping noise when making tight turns, and they would get worse with rain, so it sounds similar to what you describe...  Check the torque, as they can loosen up after a suspension change (or if they have been removed for any reason).  Also check the leaf spring bushings just in case (both the one on the spring and the shackle).

As for the rear track bar, you can remove it without any handling worries.  JFYI, CJ's did not have ANY trackbars (front or rear, IIRC), and most lift kits (as was the case in my RE 4" lift), instruct you to completely remove the rear trackbar.  Many people in this forum actually drive on a daily basis with no rear OR front track bar (I myself use a telescopic track bar on the front, just because I prefer to do so).
