16" wheels

I'm looking for a set of whels for my YJ that are 16" or 17".  Plain steel rims are ok, these are going to be a second set to save the mud tires for hunting.  The main thing is I'm trying to keep the cost way down.  In the narrow tires it seems like that more tread patterns and sizes are available in the 16-17" size.  At least in the Treadwright tires I want to try.  I thought that some off a Ford might work, but I had trouble with them not fitting because of the center hub not fitting.  I'm hoping I can find a set at the junkyard.  The YJ has a 5x114.3 (5x4.5") pattern.  Ford cars with this pattern won't fit because of the center hole being to small.

I just picked up a set of Moabs for the XJ for $300 with the MT/r's. Also got a set for my rig for similar reasons. Both will be getting treadwrights when the time comes.

As much as I like Moabs I really want some Ford Crown Vic steel wheels.  You can find them on Explorers as well as Rangers too.  (Later model Vic's have too much negative offset for a Jeep though.)  They are 16x7's so they're a bit narrow but will still work with up to 12.5" rides tires.  They care usually cheap and are no-nonsense wheels I don't have to worry about getting scuffed up.

i think the interceptor wheels have more offset than the stock (talking about the steel black ones on police interceptor crown vic).

40 mm from what I remember.  That's +1.6 so on a 7" wheel that's less then 3.5" + 1.6".  Stock is usually around 5.5", IIRC.

i meant more offset than the stock crown vic ones - not sure what the Jeep stock offset is (if that's what you were referring to)

have you tied to fit the Crown Vic rims up?  I know that a 15" older LTD rim won't fit because of the center hole being to small.  If they will fit the Crown Vic stock steels would be just fine for what I want.

I have not, unfortunately, since I haven't been able to locate any.  You could have the centers milled out if they don't fit though.  Having lug centric wheels isn't an issue.

Does anybody know if Ranger or Explorer wheels will fit over the hub?  I know the bolt pattern is the same.

i bought explorer disks for the front and they have the same center diameter - but you have to consider backspacing also.

With so many of us running 8.8's, I'd say it's not an issue.

Thanks.  I know the OE Ford wheels have less backspace than OE Jeep wheels, a bit over 4" I think.

It would still be an issue on jeep axles.  If the Ford hub is smaller it doesn't matter mounting Jeep rims to a Ford axle.  Now if the Ford hub is smaller and your trying to mount Ford rims on a Jeep axle, well you get the picture.  Newer Ford steel rims are hub centric not just the aluminum ones.

Gotcha', well if you don't get an answer in the next few weeks I'll post. Just picked up an Exploder and plan to try my Moabs on it so I can try a ford rim on the YJ.
