doing O2 sensor, throttle position sensor, posi-lock cable kit, shocks and oil change this week end on my newly purchased 1992 YJ. Saw the post on using the bigger filter so im going with the m1-301 or mobile pure1 equivalent. The motor has 153,000 on it and seems to run ok for the most part, has good oil pressure. Was wondering what everyones experience and recomendations were concerning slick 50 and or synthetic oil...

I use synthetic but I've used it since my Jeep had 12K miles.  Problem with using it on a high mileage engine is if those are hard miles and there is a lot fo wear.  If there is going to a synthetic, you could start seeing oil leaks from the seals as the crud is cleaned away from old dried seals.

I like using Mobil 1 since it's readily available at just about anyplace and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.  Some people use the more expensive Redline or Amsoil.  As for Slick 50, I usually pass that stuff up.  It was all hype when it first came out and I haven't heard of any solid evidence that say's it's better.

Hey, I was just wondering this myself. I read a bit about the synthetics in a magazine that mentioned the seal leak issue with higher mileage engines. I wanted to switch over to synthetic as well but not too sure what will happen. I've got 61,500 on my 1999. I am chicken about oil leaks though. You guys think it'll be okay?

61K isn't bad.  Have you been the only owner?  Change your oil regularly?

No, I haven't been the only owner. I'm the second. The first claims to have changed it regularly, and I have changed it once because I've only had it for a couple of months,but there is no way for me to be sure if the original owners kept it up.. I'd really like to switch to synthetic, but am worried about it causing any problems. What do you think Jeffy? should I just go for it.

Honesty, I'd consider doing it.  You don't have a huge amount of miles on the engine so that's good.  Those would have to be some pretty hard miles for the seals to be bad.

The good thing is that with synthetic's, your engine will run better and have less engine wear.

anyone heard of or use lucas oil???

a fellow jeep owner recommended it, says they make it for gear boxes and differentals too?

any comments?

Lucas is normally considered and additive. Out of the Bottle the Lucas ATF is some thick stuff. the Oil additve is thinner but probabbly still thicker than the motor oil you use.  All of the Auto parts houses here have a litlle lucas display with a hand crank and several gears so you can see how much beeter the lucas modified oils hold on the gears in your stuff.

Most additives are snake oil...

 If you want to try to go syn try a blend first and see if it causes any leaks before switching to  full syn.

 I like Mobil1 too due it's price, and availability.

I was in your  shoes a few months ago about the same mileage. Im not sure how the prev owner was on mine either i went ahead and put synthetic in mine and havent had any problems so far and Im on the 4th oil change

as for lucas oil I had good luck with it as a bandaid for a worn out amc 360 with bearing clearance issues but i dont think i would put that in my little 4 popper

well, I switched to mobil 1 on sat. So far so good. Everything seems okay, but only time will tell I guess.

I used conventional at first... it was cheap... then i bucked up for semi syn... that was better....

Needless to say, I ONLY use a full synthetic oil now that i have just over 200K KMS on my jeep....
