fender flares

i have a yj i put a set for tj style flares or a yj on it there 7 inches wide i need more like 5 inches of coverage i found a set of 4 1/2 wide flare that ar for a tj will they fit on a yj with out a ton of modifications,, thanks

They are different.  Mainly in the rear you will have to do some modification to the tub.  I was shipped some TJ bushwacker 7" flares on accident from Quadratec and thought about putting them on.  It can be done, you will have to get with a cut-off wheel and do some cutting.  There are a number of write-ups online if you google it.

As long as your not afraid to cut the tub an drill a couple holes. Will help with clearing some bigger tires as well. You can always zip tie them to the tub an if you rub a tree or rock the tie will snap before you rip a flare.

You can bolt TJ flares on without cutting but really you should cut the fenders as well to take full advantage of the flares.

i have a quick question regarding the tj flare swap.. what do you do for the side markers? the wires for the bulb aren't long enough to reach the new side marker location. did everyone just gut the wires and extend them, or is there some extra slack somewhere?

Cut and extend.  It's not a big deal.  Either that or get some TJ pigtails and solder them in.

ya i ended up extending the wires about 3".. didn't see that part in any of the write ups i red before getting to that point in the install and specifically searched for it. barely had enough solder to finish it but go it done.

How much can be cut from the front?  Mine are getting bent from tire contact.

How much can be cut from the front?  Mine are getting bent from tire contact.

Depends on how much you want to cut. There is a fair amount that can be taken off. My theory was if I'm gonna cut, I'm gonna cut a bunch! :lol: I did the flatfender look.

I have some no flare tube fenders in front. Looking back I think I would have kept my old set up. Lot of work putting on tube fenders, plus they are kinda heavy. A set with 4 inch flares would be even heavier. I do like the plastic ones from Modern Classic. I guess they are working on sets with a wider flare.

Those do look like a good alternative. Hopefully they will make some with a flare soon. 
Excess weight is something I'd like to avoid although I do think the weight of my winch made the front suspension work better on my YJ.

My friend Mark has a '93 YJ with wider TJ fender flares.  He has a problem with constantly ripping the flares off the vehicle while Jeeping, which usually destroys the side marker light wiring as well.  After he got frustrated with having to repair the wiring for what seemed like the umpteenth time, I gave him an idea: why not mount the side marker lights elsewhere?  Specifically, why not on the side of the hood (right behind the hood latch)?

So he went to AutoZone and found some generic amber marker lights in a rectangular shape.  Each required drilling three holes in the hood: two small ones for mounting the light to the hood, and a larger one in the center to allow room for the bulb fitting.  We then extended the light wiring back to the firewall, up to the hood, and then out to the lights; a few pieces of tape made sure the wires would stay put.

I know this isn't the greatest picture, but it's what I have at hand:


Needless to say, he hasn't destroyed a front side marker light ever since.
