Are all ring and pinions created equal? Are certain manufacturers better than others?


Since I am stuffing 4.88s I understand the pinion gets smaller. I am not too worried about the 8.8 this is more directed toward the dana 30. Would geting the dana 30 gears chryoed be worth the while. I read somewhere theres a place in cali that will chryo ring and pinions for $30.

Any and all input welcome. Thanks

My preference is Spicer gears first and Yukon second.  Motive and Superior are also supposed to be decent brands.  Couldn't pay me to use Genuine Gear or G2 (same company new name)

I'm running Yukon's front a rear. was a great price.  been using them about 1 year now.

really how much power you putting on them? your running a 2.5L right?

if your running big power I would recommend a bigger axles more then anything

thickness and diameters are all the same for the same axle & ratio
i know that Alloy USA gears were made in China, so i would stay away from those (don't even know if they have them anymore since the company was sold). I know Motive gears are made in the US.
x2 on stay away from G2 (although they are the cheapest)

Yukon and Spicer are the most popular from what i know

On top of the material the gears are made of there is also a matter of manufacturing process and the lapping of the gears. Price diff is minimal so stick with what's known to be working for others imo. Timken or SKF for bearings.

I got complete install kits with mine that were Yukon as well and it came with timken bearings

for some unknown reason i found it cheaper to buy shims, bearings and gasket kit (comes with seal, crush sleeve, rtv, marking compound, cover screws and yoke nut) separate as compared to the whole install kit - not sure why, you would think that is the other way around.

you're right, forgot that i needed different carrier bearings so that was the problem - from what i remember when i looked for a kit with those was something like $170 and even $230 or something crazy like that from Alloy USA or Superior (can't remember which one).

at $80 that's a great deal for sure
looked at completeoffroad website and they are $109 currently http://completeoffroad.com/i-122928-master-install-kit-dana-35-k-m35.html which is still a good deal.

when i bought mine since I needed different carrier bearings (30 spline axles and diff) and could not find a kit at the time (although now i see that completeoffroad has them for $130) i did something like this (all the 4wd parts are 10% off although i think i got a better deal back then by price matching a few of them)

got 2 of each LM102949 and LM102911 from rockauto.com for a total of $34

and got the rest separate

and it is still below the $130 from the kit at completeoffroad but in all honesty i would have probably get it rather than purchase them separately for that little of a difference

with the regular carrier bearings which are $26 as a kit it is $109 total :yikes: which is the same price as getting them in a kit but way more convenient to order that rather than separate (not to mention if you get them for $80).

Mine are. Richmond front, Precision gear rear (before they got sold) I cryo'd all the axle shafts,lockouts too.

What you want to look for is if they are made out of 8620 steel, that's what's really important. OEM gears are made of 4027 steel, and so are a lot of the cheap ring and pinion sets. "

dunno about Yukon, i know G2 gear sets are repackaged but i don't know where they are made. Alloy USA were manufactured in China. Motive has their own factory but i can't be sure if they sell anything made overseas (i would think not but you never know).

I used performance offroad center "white box" specials. Made in korea. They've held up so far but i don't have a lot of trips on them yet. the front was like $110 and the rear a little more, not including install kits.
