the fan will be off when you go to the "vent" position

fyi, while driving if the vent is open fully there is way more air coming in compared to when the fan is blowing at max if you have any window open.

In my case (hard half doors with sliders) more air comes in trhough the vent than the windows...

what i meant was as opposed to having the windows closed - there is less air coming thru the vent in that case.

I have that issue also-when i push it over to vent nothing comes out no air no wind, no vent.
Now when its in the off positioin  have more air flow by my feet, where I would think the vent would come from.
My YJ has A/C - not sure if that changes anything.

The YJ has two independent systems unlike with most other cars or trucks.  The AC was an afterthought is has it's own controls.  IIRC, there are two knobs for the AC unit.  On the dash next to the radio you will have your heater and vent controls.  If you look at the box in the passenger side footwell, a door should open when you switch to 'vent'.  There is also another door up, in the dash, above the steering column that is another vent.  Both should open when you switch to 'vent'.

It may help to vent the exhaust out to the side where turbulence will quickly dissipate the CO2.  That's why many manufacturers do that.  They spent a lot of money on wind tunnel and real world tests to determine that.  You may still get odor, but the CO2 won't be a problem.
