fuel pump assembly question
« on: April 07, 2010, 10:51:09 AM »
Ok. Took her for a cruise and she died. Acted like out of gas. But had 1/4 tank left.
So dropped the tank to check/change the pump.

My question. How does the pump/sending unit assembly go together. Im pretty sure this aint correct. ?

And lastly, this part came with the new pump, but cant figure out where it goes?

Looks like your connector hose is too long.  That pump should be up in the bracket.  Plastic piece looks like it would fit on the bottom of the pump to keep the inlet from sucking the bottom of the tank.

x2

and also looks like you have a bad contact on one of those pins and it heated up (unless the pump seized) - judging by the color i think you might have those wires reversed, so have a look at it.

The filter i took off. But seen how it was all gommed together, thought i should take a pic. Doesnt look right at all. But, with all the given supplies, if could not get it to look any better anyways.
And the connector that looks burnt is burnt. That sucker got hot and melted the plastic around it. When i looked at it after pulling it from the tank, that terminal was just barely hanging onto the blade terminal. So, my guess is bad connection, caused resistance, and then melting (You can see my contact and shrink tube i just added.)
I bet also it would cause an intermittent pump failure. Depending on the level of fuel in the tank, and how hot that terminal was getting (how long the pump was running).

I bet that was a head scratcher for the last guy.  :twofingers:

Anyways, im just gonna cob this bitch together the best way i can see. That upper plate is adjustable, so i will clamp it down lower.

I took the lines off the tank, and hit the key (with this old setup still installed) and i could hear the pump run for about 2 seconds, priming, and no fuel would shoot out of the tank. ? That was weird. So i said screw it. I bet a new pump wouldnt hurt anyways.
I also ordered a fuel pressure test kit, just incase this whole thing starts getting  retarded.... I know my luck.

did you try the wires backwards, that's what i seem to see in those pics (the burnt wire is on the non-burned prong)

No. The clean one is a new one i just added (replacing the burnt one). The other one looks burnt, but its just varnished. I didnt switch the wires. Infact, that varnished one, i never even unplugged at all.
Really, i would like to replace that whole burnt wire, but not sure where i would get gas resistant wire..... if there is such a thing.
