Death by tire Pyrolysis
« on: April 08, 2010, 08:53:04 AM »
I saw this on another board and thought it was worth passing along. It's about 10 minutes long. Sometimes things happen where you don't think any harm will come out of it.

wow.. that's some serious heat transfer chemical reaction (so much for getting away from Thermo by going to the forums..) 22 hours that's crazy.

No.  The reason the tire explodes is not because of pyrolysis directly but because the chemical reaction is contained in the vessel/tire.  The fuel is the container in this case.  The heat is causing the rubber in the tire to break down into carbon.

When you reseat a tire, I'm assuming with propellant, you're not using heat but rather the quickly expanding gases to seat the tire and so the tire itself does not get hot nor does it burn.
