Broken soft-top zippers...
« on: April 09, 2010, 02:59:33 PM »
Hey all. Well, today I broke a zipper for one of the rear side windows while putting my soft-top back up. I already had a couple broken zipper track ends, but they weren't a huge problem. This is a big problem though, it's gonna leak like a mofo and I won't be able to drive with the window in because it might blow out. Is there any place I can get a replacement zipper? Online? Boat canvas shops? Jeep stealership?

Thanks!

Upholstery or boat cover shop.  Maybe even a shoe repair.

I found a place at the marina here that does custom boat tops and said they also do soft top repairs for jeeps, so I would think any boat place could do that

It's common for anyone who does upholstery or boat covers/top to be able to replace a zipper.  They might even be able to replace the plastic as well as patch any holes and reseal any seams.

I bought a tonneau cover and when I tried taking it off I ripped the seam (now I know why it was only 200.00) and need to have about 1/2 inch restitched.  I will have to see if there is any boat places in Carson because Tahoe will cost an arm and a leg.

If you or a wife or SO can sew, it would probably be worth it to buy an old sewing machine that can sew denim.  If it tore at the channel, you would just set the machine up so it drops into the preexisting holes so you're not punching through plastic.   My old Singer would probably make short work of it.  I bought it for $100.

Here is a question for all of you.  My half door's tops won't snap because it won't stretch far enough.  Any ideas on how to stretch out my top to get it to snap in?

Two things come to mind.  Either the top is old and it doesn't stretch anymore or your trying to put it on when it's cold.

It was brand new.  it was from replace-a-top.  I am going to try to install it on there correctly again.  Going to use a hairdryer to try to heat up the fabric

It's best to leave it in the sun for a while to warm up.  Or bring it inside for a while
