ok while i was doing all the maint this week end i thought i'd take a crack at the 4wd indicator light.

it stays in all the time

I removed the sensor had my brother turn on the key id engage the sensor and the light would go on and off, so the sensor is good

I engaged 4wd and spun all 4 tires, disengaged and only back 2 spun....so its got to be that its not disengaging enough to activate sensor correct?

also i noticed that the little round thing with the 2 vacuume hoses attached had a little play in it about 1/4 to 1/2 inch back and forth

does this matter???

also looking at the transmission job that i have comming up and noticed that the motor and bellhousing are about the same in appearance mud here and there, light brown in color normal age looking stuff, but where the transmission meets the bellhousingthe transmission is very new looking metal...wonder if someone tried to fix this before, also made me wonder if i really do have an ax-5 transmission. Is there any visual clues i could look for from the bottom to determine this? markings? length?

i built a posi- lock out of a spring and a choke cable when mine took a crap the first time i took it out   :roll:

The diaphram (round thing) is able to rotate a bit. Can you tell if the switch broke.

Sounds like your 4WD works fine other then the switch.

It's more then likely an AX-5 though.  Do you have a digital camera you can use to snap some pictures of it?

From the looks of it the transmission is an AX-5.  The front part of the transmission does look cleaner but then the dirt sort of feathers into it a bit so it may have been out of the way and didn't get oil on it like the bellhousing and rear half.  If the dirt immediatly stops at the seems where the bellhousing bolts together, I'd suspect it was maybe rebuilt or cleaned up.  Perhaps the clutch was replaced and it was cleaned up a bit while it was out.

The band was a paper ID band that probably fell off.  I think I've still got parts of mine.

Those white dials on the axle ends are plastic cover plates.  They keep the big stuff from entering the axle shaft.

Well, I had basically the same problem with my jeep if you check last weeks listings (is it the axel shift motor?).  Today I replaced the vacuume switch at the transfer case (spelo recommended this) and it worked.  If it is the same as mine, the switch is stuck in 4wd so there is a constant vacuume to keep the hubs locked thus the light on.  Your 2-4 wd is still functional as the transfer case is doing its job.  The switch was $19 at an autoparts store and you can reach it on the top of the transfer case 1 1/16" deep socket!

replaced the switch 13.00+ 1 1/16 deep socket, total 19.98 but no joy. so either its a vacuume leak or something else....i would reckon scince the transmission has bad problems anyway it may be related. going for rebiuld will see after that. If still a problem im gonna try the choke switch and spring idea.

Easy check for vaccume

At the axel shift motor (on the front axel) you can disconnect the hose housing.  There should be vaccume on the drivers side for 4wd and passenger side when shifted to 2wd.  If there is not vacuume there you can bet it is a hose leak.

I would definately NOT rebuild that tranny. Most likely the rebuild wil cost you upward towards $1000. Do youself a favor and swap in a AX15.
