clutch, clutch master and slave cylinder question

so i'm doing a 5spd swap on my 95 yj and putting an ax-5 in it , the driveline i bought was out of a 1990 yj (ax-5 as well). now there is where im getting confused, up to 94 ran internal slave 94 and after ran external slave, so the trans i have is for an internal but looing at the bellhousing it looks like i can run an external.

so what should i run?

and isnt the clutch master between and internal slave and external slave different?

no brainer, run an external slave - i think you need to swap the belhousing but i'm not sure about the release bearing guide (the pipe around the input shaft that also holds the input shaft seal) as you probably need to swap that as well.

Earlier XJ's, pre-87 had external slaves.  Up till 1993 had internal slaves.  94 up had external slaves.  1993's used a different slave then the 87-92's though.  There was a problem with Chryslers supplier and there were a bunch of bad slaves.  '93 was a band aid while '94 was the fix.

If I were you, I would go with an external.

now my bellhousing looks like its meant for an external, but the guy i bought it from told me he ran and internal. and by lloking at the input shaft on th trans there is like no surface for the bearing to sit on,  its hard to describe, the shaft is thicker by the spline then thins out after the spline, idk if thats how the jeeps look, im used to older dodge and chevy trans

do you have your tranny out yet? when you do you'll probably see what needs to be done (what parts to swap over). I don't think the AX5 transmissions were any different between years other than the bellhousing and interna/externa slave + the bearing guide

+1 on the external, the internals don't last much over 50K wheeling and they are a B***h to swap...

that input shaft looks different than the one on my AX5 i think (from what i remember) - i'll have a look tonight at it and maybe take a pic and post it back here.

after the splines on the input it doesnt look like a bearing should ride on that its not level after the spline

like i said, you need the bellhousing and the bearing guide from yours

and you can see here that there is a "pipe" on which the bearing slides, you need the one that is currently on your AX5 on the vehicle, comes off with the cover that goes around the input shaft

you will also need the fork (the piece of metal that goes across and pushes the release bearing) and the bellhousing (you can't use the one in the pictures)

junkyard for those items is your best bet.

in this case you're probably better off with the internal slave - but i have no clue how that is setup, maybe someone else can step in and clarify what you're missing there.

You can not run an external clutch slave with your current bellhousing.  You will need a '94+ bellhousing and input shaft cover.

I've got everything here that you need, minus a new clutch master cylinder.  I've got a bellhousing, front input cover, fork, throwout bearing (you will probably want to buy that new).  PM me if you want to work on the cost +shipping.  I'm near St. Louis.
