Newbie got some issues.. =(
« on: June 21, 2010, 02:41:56 PM »
As per the title sez, I'm having some concerns with my newly purchased 95 Wrangler.
Issues:
1. every now and then, the check engine light came on. However, when I pulled over and turned off the engine and turn it back on, it's gone... usually until I drove it for about few miles and it turned back on again...

2. Yet again, every now and then, while accelerating, I sometimes lost power - not just gone, but it's more felt like dirty fuel line - somewhat sputtering /hesitation...for few seconds,... and it's ok after that. However, I got those checked before and that's not the issue..

thoughts & ideas would be most appreciated. =)

Thanks all!

Check the PCM for CEL (Check Engine Light) codes.  http://4bangerjp.com/forums/index.php/topic,3419.0.html

I'm going to guess it's the O2 sensor since that's what mine did.

when your engine light comes on check the codes by cycling the key and count the engine light flashes then you can target your problem.

by the sounds of it to me it will probably be a o2 sensor or throttle position sensor but get the codes from it first and go from there.

thanks Jeffy!! you posted while i typed almost the same thing lol :thumb:

I had similar symptoms and it was the CPS (crank position sensor).

X2; pull the codes and see what's going on...  Or, if you are lazy like me, get a cheap code reader and plug it in.

He's too lazy.  Although a good reader will also tell you what the code means and will usually be able to reset them.  Still, it only takes a minute to start the code process then then look them up.

are you sure you just don't have a bad component in you're fuel or electrical system, if something shorts it could disrupt you spark plugs firing or your fuel pump, also you're TBI might need work too. Whens the last time someone tuned it up?

To be honest, I had problem counting the codes (I found it tricky to know when one number finished and the other started).  I also like (like Jeffy said) the fact that I can reset the codes, reset the ECU completely, and to be told what the number means...  I got the reader (used) for about $70, so that's what I use now (no mistakes reading the codes).  Plus, it also reads OBDII, so that means I can use it on the wife's car.
