2.5L Engine
« on: June 27, 2010, 09:24:37 PM »
A person I work with has a 84 or 85 Cherokee Pioneer with a 2.5L engine (carb).  With such a big vehicle did he factory use hi performance parts?  Anything that will work with my 94 wrangler?  I can get the whole thing and strip at my leisure, any Ideas?

depends on which 2.5l you have.

mentioned in a different topic earlier, they could have used either an AMC or a GM iron duke
An XJ would never have an Iron Duke.

It has the AMC logo on the valve cover.  I have the 2.5L with FI.  I think it is the same block as mine, but I was just wondering what kind of parts it had in it since the Cherokee is such a larger vehicle?  It also had power steering, would that be able to cross over?

For several years, the engine was detuned for the Wrangler; from at least 1992 to 1995, it produced 130 hp (97 kW) and 149 lbˇft (202 Nˇm) of torque with 9.2:1 compression in the Cherokee and Comanche."  Got this off Wikipedia, if true would the older engine be better since mine was made in 94?

these are the specs i found
1990 Jeep Cherokee 4cyl curb weight 2832 lbs
1997 Jeep Wrangler 4 cyl curb weight 3092 lbs
add about 240 lbs for the i6 version in both cases

Cherokee is a unibody construction, Wrangler has a chassis and contrary to the appearance the Cherokee was about 250lbs lighter than the Wrangler

2.5L on Cherokee carbureted version made 105HP, TBI up to '87 was rated at 117 and 121 after that till 1990, 1991 and up was MPFI rated at 130HP

So if not the whole Engine, should the exhaust manifold fit?
