mini stretch
« on: July 10, 2010, 09:38:47 AM »
So I am trying to squeeze a 5.2L/46rh/231 into my 95yj. With motor mocked up for postion as far forward as possible with electric fan. It left me with a 14inch driveshaft. Unacceptable in my eyes. Tom woods agreed it needs a bit more length. I sold my 231 w sye for 250 to try and recoupe the cost of a super short I will put on my spare. That saves me 3inches. I was thinking of doing the gas tank mod for 2 inches of clearance on the tank. Then using btf 7 inch long spring perches in spring under configuration to redrill the hole for centerpin 2inches forward/pushing the axle back 2 inches. Waggy spring are not in the budget. If I can get pics to work a doodle of what I am thinking.

And a link to my build thread if intereasted

http://www.gljt.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=11939

More important is my little mini stretch idea gonna work. If I get 3inches in super short and 2 in pushing axle back a smidge I should be able to run a 19inch drive shaft. Please all ideas and info appreciated

How much lift do you plan on running?  A 16" driveshaft isn't bad in a CV setup with moderate lift, longer than some stock Wrangler rear driveshafts.

I wouldn't get too extreme on moving the spring perch around as it may aggravate the spring wrap, especially behind a v8.

I run a super short SYE, the one from www.performanceoffroadcenter.com is pretty reasonable.

do you need to move the gastank to be able to move the axle back 2''? I want to move mine back 1.5'' and so far i think the best option i have is to re-drill the angle shim and the stock spring perch (just enlarge the forward hole on it) so it sits flat on the shim on the whole length. My d/s is 21'' long with a D300 behind an NV3550 - but like Bounty said, you should be able to get away with 17'' also, i've seen shorter ones although not desirable they seem to work.

I'd go with XJ leafs and move the axle back.  Then you'll need a new tank.  Otherwise you can get an extra inch, tops, by moving the center hole in the perch forward an inch.  The other option would be to move the engine and drivetrain forward.

My stock 2,5 auto with reg sye and 8,8 had an 18inch 19with 8,8 flangedriveshaft. 5,2l bout 33inch and 46rh31 inch. total of 64inch. with motor pitched 7* and pushed forwad far as possible with electric fan i had a14inch droveshaft at 21*angle. woods says 35* start binding. allowing me only bout 1,5 inch droop before bind. 10* for every inch of droop. i have almost 3inch droop now. might want to go waggy spring later for more. so every inch i can get necesary. DID what i just said make any sence???

what about a dana 300, would that give you more room (not sure how much shorter it is compared to 231 with sye) - just a thought

231 with standard sye is 16,5inches long. the super short sye brings it down to 13,5. not sure what a 300 is. but jb conversions claimscshorter than atlas

i'll measure mine this evening and let you know - i have the regular rear output D300, i know you can get a shorter version output shaft as well but might be price prohibitive.

I am not famillar with the 5.2,so with that being said, could you run a different tranny?Th-350 short = 27 5/8",700r4 = 27 3/4,4l60-e =27 3/4 also those measurements are probably with tailcone, either way you would gain a few inches.

Trannie would Blow the budget up. The only bolt on auto would be 727 and I would loose the OD. A manual would save space. ax15 with dodge v6 bellhousing bolts up.  But would blow the budget up and I would loose the ability to have my wife or daughter drive jeep. I am the only one that can drive a manual. I decided I am gonna drill the perches off center by 2inches. That way my driveshafts will be the right length. My future suspension upgrade is going to include 4inch lift waggy springs in sua configuration. But thats down the line due to budget.

IIRC a SS SYE will be 3-1/4" shorter then a standard SYE.  Then you could easily buy or drill your perches to give you an additional inch.  If you need more then move the drivetrain forward 2-4" and you'll be set.  When you do the stretch, you'll have plenty of room.

Yea if between ss sye and s on spring perch using the btf 7 inch long perches I picked up. I should be looking at around 19ish which should work. When I mocked up the motor  and trans I ahd it as fra forward as I could go. So moving further up isnt really an option
