Topic: Regearing 6 spd

Hey everyone,

So I've surfed through the forums and can't seem to surface anything about regearing a 6-speed tranny.  If I went with the 4.88 regear as many of the 5-speed guys do, what would that mean for that 6th gear?  Would I be able to gear lower?  What ratio would you guys recommend for an '06 6-spd?  33x12.5" MTs, 4" suspension lift.  I haven't even called around to shops yet (I just realized that a regear is now within budget WOOO), but I want to be able to bounce ideas off the guys to see what sticks.  Thanks!

4.88 is as low as you can go with the stock axles, I'd highly recommend 4.88.

What is your stock axle ratio with the 2.4L 6spd?

The biggest difference between a 5-speed and a 6-speed is the extra gear, usually between 3 and 4 or 4 and 5.  The top gear is still an Overdrive and the next one down is your 1:1.

So what it really gives you better gear choices so you can keep the engine running in the power-band.  With less gears you have to either downshift and run the RPM's high or stay in gear and lug the engine till it can get back into the power band.

I don't think it's worth it to swap in any gears other then 4.88's with stock axles.

6 speed tranny has less of an overdrive than a nv3500 or an ax5 or a ax15
So 4.56 or 4.88 are both good choices, I ran both. Even with 35" tires I was pretty happy with the 4.56 gears. Only reason I changed was to get better crawl speed even with the 4 to 1 I wanted it to crawl a little slower and I was changing the front axle to a High pinion dana 30 so the extra gear for the rear was a little over a hundred bucks for the gears. I do this stuff myself so the cost was minimal.
Overall I am very happy with the little 2.4 engine

Not sure, I haven't crawled under there to look.  I actually just got it back from my parents who were using it in some flood damage areas/marshes, so I need to do a quick detail on it.  I'll probably look when I do that, but I was assuming the 4.88 was what I'd end up going with.  I didn't know if the extra gear would throw the entire gearset's ratio off.

I am going to start calling around today to get some price quotes and see.  I'd like to get it done sooner, rather than later though.  I'd like to be able to use 5th gear again.  I feel like that 6 spot will still be lonely though... ha

wait a minute, you're only using 4 out of 6 gears? that doesn't sound like the axle gears are the problem

He is not geared low enough in the axles, so while rowing thru the gears the motor runs out of steam and can't keep 6th, or 5th. Lower axle gears will raise the RPM's so those gears are useable.

If your 1:1 ratio (i.e. 5th gear in a six speed) isn't even usable right now, go straight to 4.88. I agree that 6th will probably be lonely even after that.
