So I have this little lifted jeep with intake, exhaust, and a cleaned out fuel system that twists the body through the first 3 gears and loves going 80. Problem is it's still on stock tires so it kinda looks like it's on it's tippy toes and the tires I have are getting shredded with even modest offroad use. I was going to go too 32's but I was wondering how poorly my jeep would perform on road. I know it's a jeep so I'm not one of those people who wants race car performance. Just something that can hold it's own on the highway and what-not. It's a fivespeed manual with 4.11 gears. So I was wondering if you guys could share some experiences with 31-33 inch tires and give me some feedback because I've never driven a modified 2.5 liter on larger than stock tires before.

If you regear to 4.88 it should continue to perform well.

When I ran 33-12.50's with the 4.10's 5th gear was rarely used. My motor was all stock, not sure with the things you have done how much better it would be. But it would not be the same as far as get up and go. Handling would be close to what it is now as far as turning body roll etc.
For bigger tires regearing is about the only fix IMO.

If you want to be able to do 80 then go with 31x10.5R15's.  You can run those with no-lift with a little bit of rubbing or add a little lift.

You're fighting two wars with taller tires.  One has to do with the tires themselves.  You're changing the overall gear ratio by going larger.  Larger tires are heaver and will make the Jeep feel a bit more sluggish so you'll get reduced acceleration as well as braking.  For every pound, it's equal to 2 pounds of sprung weight inside the Jeep.  So a 5lbs increase in tires will be equal to about 40lbs of additional weight.  There is also aerodynamics as a smaller tire cuts through the wind better.  Larger tire also means a larger contact patch which can be more friction with the road.

On the second front, larger tires typically means lift.  More lift will cut down on the already lacking aerodynamics.  The isn't a problem till you reach about 35MPH.  The faster you go the more wind plays into it and it's exponential.

I've driven 5 years with 32's and stock gears and when the National HWY speed was 55 MPH, it wasn't too bad.  I used 5th occasionally as well.  Now that it's 65MPH with most people doing 70-75, it won't cut it.  You would want to definitely regear for anything larger then 31's and even for 31's you still light want to regear.

You might also want to check out the Skinny tire thread.  There are pictures as well as my ramblings on skinny tires.  This is after 10 years or so running 35x12.5R15's and having a daily driver.

ok, so it sounds like 31s would be the ticket. Does it matter that much what kind of tire I get. Like a BFG KM2 vs. a A/T as long as the weight is around the same?

MT's will probably weight a bit more then an AT typically.  Also MT's are a fraction of an inch taller then AT's.  Any difference won't be significant enough to notice unless you track mileage on a yearly basis though.

It looks like it would work as well as any AT tire.  Kind of has some mud tire look to it also with the side lugs.  As long as you don't plan on doing anthing too extreme, it looks like it should work well.

Those are Wallyworlds exclusive Wrangler Duratrac.  I haven't really heard of anything bad.  They are more aggressive then an AT but not as aggressive as an MT.  From what I've read, they're actually pretty good BUT do pick up small rocks.  Can't complain about the price though.

See if Discount Tires/American Tires will match a set of Duratrac's?

Buy the tires carryout and take them to a firestone close to you. As long as they are brand new tires with the stickerson then they can mount them for you for a fee. Every firestone has 1 really good machine that is made for specialty rims like those. Trust me a manage one here in oklahoma. Just make sure they still have the stickers on cause our policy is very strick on them being new. I have mount 37s on 15s and 35 series on 24s with these machines so they will work.
