LED interior underdash lights
« on: January 03, 2012, 01:10:34 AM »
So I bought a set of interior LED lights that mount under the dash and under the seats for my Honda a few months ago. I liked them o much I went out and bought another set for my jeep. This item http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000I04Z7Q/ref=oh_o04_s00_i01_details    For the price I think it is a fun little addition for my jeep and given my mood I can change the color of the lights. Now when the lever for my turn signal switch falls off I can find it pretty quickly, I can see the climate control levers much better and it is just fun. I will try to add a few pictures later or tomorrow night. Just wanted to share this idea with anyone who might be interested in a different idea for their jeep.

I ran the wires entirely under the carpet, had the remote set up to come out by the driver seat so it can be turned off easily and quickly if needed. Doesn't shine so much that I can't see what I am doing but if you travel through water, probably a bad idea! Well I will run out in a minute aand take a few pictures I guess

It was kinda bright out so this is all I could get. The set up I have has a 7 function light set up where some of them would cause you to go into a seizure from strobes. I like the solid red/blue/purple/green colors.

looks good

just wondering why didn't you wire this to the existing under dash lights? you could use the dimmer switch to turn them on (if you push it all the way up there's a click and the lights turn on even with the doors closed).

That would actually be a lot better of a set up to wire them to the dimmer switch because sometimes when I shut the jeep off, the lights stay on. Right now I have then hooked up to the radio power wire. If I wired them up to the dimmer switch, would the normal light turn on as well or I could just take that out right?

When it gets dark out tonight I will post a few better pictures of the set up.

That's how I'd do it.  Then the turn on when the doors are opened and can be turned on manually with the dimmer switch.  I'd get rid of the OE light at that point.

I've been considering getting some LED light strips like these, myself.  http://www.amazon.com/Lighting-Airplane-Aircraft-Interior-Cockpit/dp/B001BMA1TQ/ref=sr_1_12?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1325638767&sr=1-12

you can take the stock bulbs out, if you forget the dimmer clicked all the way up would still stay on after turning off the engine (at least i think so, I didn't check). My thinking behind asking why you didn't use the stock wiring was to not add additional wires and another switch, plus would turn on when you open the doors (ads to the wow factor )

I don't think my jeep is advanced enough for lights to turn on when I open the doors!

if it's a '92 it should unless something's missing but was meant to be from the factory

I will checkk tomorrow when I get home from work but I can't seem to remember if there is a button in the door frame to turn on and off the lights. For the lights that I installed, here is a video from youtube that demonstrates what the set-up I have does.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx_q_x0uN5Q     I can't seem to figure out how to post videos. I will look at that again.

A '92 will have at least one door switch and an interior light on the driver side.    They were like that from '87-'95.5.  Not too keen on the whole techno rave inside the car though.  :wall:

Is there a fuse for this somewhere? I will also have to check in the AM to see if I can find it or to see what is up with this because my lights are always off.

Does your horn and dash lights work?  If not then it's probably the small 15A mini fuse in the Power Distribution Box.

Well someone before me did something wrong to the original horn so it doesn't work when you push the horn. Dash lights only work when I turn them on. I did find the little push button for the door but the fuse looked like it was in good shape. The push button does look like it is being held together by tape though so that will be my next step.

Huh?

The gash lights, horn and stereo are all on the same 15A fuse.  So if all three are out then it's most likely the fuse.  Now if you're electrical's are all cobbled together then all bets are off.

For the door switches, there are usually two plugs for the driver side.  One is for the light and the other is for teh key buzzer.  If the doors have been off then usually the person will pull the plugs out from behind the switch.
