Greetings to everyone here on the forum.  I am in Eastern Iowa and just purchased my first jeep!  A 1995 Wrangler Rio Grande.  This is my first 4wd vehicle, but I look forward to modding it and taking it offroad.

Hello Everyone- I'm Ted :D from Central Massachusetts.

I have owned and enjoyed a Green 1999 SE Wrangler 4Cyl 5 Speed for 18 months.  So far I have wheeled on the beach in on Martha's Vineyard (Chappy) and on some snowboarding trips western mass snowstorms.

My Jeep was bone stock when I got it, but I have added a Rough Country 2" Coil Spacer lift, 31" BFG T/A's, 4 longer RC hydraulic shocks and a grill/brush guard with 2 pairs of Hellas. For the winter I picked up a hard top with fiberglass upper half doors, from http://www.bulldawgdoors.com/

So far I had to replace the front ujoints, steering stabilizer and swaybar end links to get rid of the 'death wobble' prior to adding the lift kit.  My jeep runs great but I the 31" tires/4:10 gears have killed the top end on the highway not to mention the zippy stock acceleration through the gears.

I'm seriously considering 4:88 gears with the 31's and perhaps an Aussie front locker while the diff covers are off.  I have seen some threads on 4:88's with 33's and I was wondering if anyone had experience with 4:88's and 31's.  Also if you had to add 1 locker would you be better off in the front or rear or is it just a matter of personal preference?

Thanks, Ted

Welcome, from what I have seen you would be better off with a rear locker, but you don't want one in a dana 35C. Upgrade the rear axle or put in a front locker. Selectable if you can swing it. If you do a search there's been conversations on this subject.

Search this one out when you get the chance...  Chris Franklin started a really interesting topic regarding this exact question.

And welcome to the boards!!

Thanks both of you, I'll check out the thread.  Also how do you like the 4.88's with the 2.5L?

Hi folks,
My name is George, I'm retired Air Force. I Love Jeeps. I have five,  the 98 TJ 4 banger my newest. Also a 71 Waggy, 73 J4000, 74 Cherokee, and a 79 Waggy(parts). I live in North Pole Alaska, I am the Equipment Manager for our local 4X4 club Arctic Offroad. www.arcticoffroad.com  We are a family oriented club open to any 4X4 vehicle. Alaska is an outstanding place to live and wheel, it can get a bit cold in winter and parts brake alot easier at -30. we still have fun though. the summers make up for the cold winters, u can wheel all night and it still be light out. Take Care.
George

Hi everybody,

Been lurking around for a bit now, borrowing your brains, been very helpful as mine gets a bit gummed up now and then. Sold my much loved XJ a few months ago and got a now much more loved '01 TJ 2.5, 5-speed. Felt really sorry for it, was advertised as being in great condition, never been off road. Why buy a Jeep if you never take it off road, so, fixed that.

Put on 2.5" RE springs, pro comp shocks/stabilizer, JKS discos, Milemarker 8000lb winch, Hella 500's, Rockcrawler bumpers and rear tire/gas can carrier and some other neccesities on the outside. Under the hood it got an Airaid intake and TBS, Performance Distributors ignition, electric fan from a Lincoln MKVIII, Optima yellow top, inside it got really dirty and will never get clean again. Still have some more to do, planning on upping the tires to 33's (has 31's right now, but will need new ones soon) and working on the axles, and it's set up for towing behind the rv.

Being in San Diego it spends quite a bit of time in the Borrego area. We'll be going out there this weekend and taking it thru the squeeze and up by the dropoff and let it try out it's new bits and pieces.

This is my first 4-banger Wrangler and I got a lot of good advice here that helped me to eke out an additional 4.634 horsepower and 1.847 lbft of torque with only several hundred dollars worth of modifications and a few more to go. Not bad eh?

I just got the new Jeep catalog from 4WheelParts and...
Got to run, have to check the balance on my Visa cad
