At Camp Jeep, I spoke with a Jeep Corp rep about this. The gov't will be coming out with a regulation where the fuel sulage will be mounted behind frame. Not knowing the specifics of the requirement, the rear crossmember wasn't enough. A lot of the vehicles have their tank midship. Doesn't really mean its better protected? Maybe in the gov't eyes....

Take a look at the H3, Xterra, the other large SUVs of today, etc. They are all getting a mid-ship tank design.

Doing a long arm with a midship tank location requires a relocation of the tank. You got to move the muffler and tail pipe, so whats wrong with a tank?

if thats so then jeep could have gone old school and put the tank under the drivers seat again...

wait but thats more unsafe in my eyes... would you rather have a gas tank exsplode directly unde you or out the back of your jeep.. and if you get a gas fire in the engin compartment you will ahve less time to get out befor the gas tank explodes

This is just what I have read but the gas tank relocation was to move it to a place on the vehicle where it was less suseptable to being punctured in the event of a collision of some kind.  I don't believe they were thinking about the explosion dangers as much as just reducing the chance it would be hit/punctured.  The article (can't remember where I found it) also discussed how this change, along with several others on the JK, were a result of Jeep having to meet new safety regulations on the new model.

You don't even like the JK.  :lol1:  I think the whole long arm is a bit moot right now since the stock JK's run tires over 30" stock now.  They have a lot of fender room for 35's without much lift.  (2.5")  Even when you get to 4" it's not bad.  The suspension isn't quite the same as the arms do not hang below the frame anymore either.  They're up into the frame now.  This gives them more length and better angles.  Also, with the added length and width, there is probably a lot less torquing.  You're trying to compare an orange with a banana without actually have ever seen a banana.

After looking at some ultra screwy picts of the JK I have, you could fairly easily add control arm mounts to the frame.  It probably wouldn't be bolt-on unless you were willing to drill the frame and insert sleeves.  You'd have to drop the tank for that though.  Still a Long arm suspension could be made.

All the Jeeps are too heavy now.  I think the V6 is a good base engine.  V6's were used in the Kaiser Era Jeeps and was a good engine.

ant that the truth.. thats why i love old jeeps. there small light and can go anywhere.. and if you blow the motor cuz water got in it. its easy to pull and rebuild and or you can replace it with something more powerfull.

hearing kaiser and jeep together makes me think of Nazi jeep..

Well, I think the new Jeep looks pretty cool BUT, in my opinion, it's not really a Jeep in the traditional sense. I understand that with the new Hummer H3, and the Toyota FJ Cruiser, Jeep has to compete in a growing marketplace and appeal to customers that want the look of a Jeep, but also want a quiet, comfortable ride, with all the little creature comforts. To me, that's not what owning a Jeep is all about. Sure, it's loud with the soft top, and the zipper windows are inconvenient, but the Jeep is supposed to be a utilitarian vehicle. It's not supposed to have molded plastic bumpers and power windows. Maybe I'm a traditionalist, or just a crotchety old bastard, but a Jeep is not a Jeep unless it has 4 leaf springs and a long, straight dash board.

That being said, it's a pretty cool looking vehicle. It's one that my wife would probably enjoy driving.
