TBS question
« on: March 18, 2007, 09:39:53 AM »
I have a 94 yj that I am installing  a 4.0 TB & TBS. I am getting the AIRAID TBS. Do I need the TBS for a 4.0 since I will have a 4.0 TB, or for the 2.5 because that is the engine? Thanks

Doesn't matter, they are the same. Just get one with the same bore size as the TB you are getting.

If I was buying one I'd probably go with the smooth bore ones on ebay that sell for under $50.

Are the spacers with a helix/spiral bore just bs or does it actually do something?  Always wanted to ask that.

Well, seeing that a commercial TBS like the Poweraid, JET, Hesco, etc... cost around $70 and up and the ebay ones are $50 and under, I would save my $20.  The bore on the TBS with the cuts are usually smaller then the TB.  The ones with a very shallow spiral don't really have enough surface area to produce a swirling effect and the ones that do reduce the size of the bore.  Then you have to get that swirling air through the intake and through the head to the valves.  I don't think the swirling will get that deep into the intake either.  It has to take a 90* turn at the bottom of the intake and get to the head before it's able to mix with the fuel.  That's a lot of swirling.

With that said I have a Poweraid but I bought it when no one else made them and they didn't even have an official 2.5L spacer.  I should probably hone my TBS.  Maybe one of these days.

Some of the "generic" ones on ebay that I've seen do  have  a different bore size for the 4.0 vs. the 2.5. Ask the seller  what the size is and get the same as the 4.0 TB, so you don't add restriction!
