found a great deal but worried
« on: October 29, 2007, 03:18:47 PM »
Alright so I talked to a guy the other day and he said he had some 33" tires that he was lookin to get rid of. $600 for all four tires with rims. Come to find out they r 33"x14.5" R15 Mickey T's prettty much new. Still had 25% of the knubs on it. I told him that I would have to think about it cause of my axle. Come to find out his brother has a dana 35, rebuilt, with 4.56 gears and I believe he said auburn posie??? to sell for cheap. Now I'm wondering will this combo work or will it still turn the other axle into a grenade??? I know the 4.56 gear is kinda small but its a lot better then stock. Forgot to mention that I have an auto.

I'd be a little concerned about running tires that wide on a D35.  Your gears are not the weak spot, the shafts and c-clips are.  The other thing to keep in mind is if you have the clearance to move a 14.5" wide tire around in the wheel wells.  Using a tire that wide is going to require wheel spacers or rims with very little offset - both will put a strain on the axles and bearings.

yeah thats what I was thinkin, just wanted to get some other opinions. Oh and I was wrong, I think he said 12.5 wide. But anyways I was really loookin at the axle more then the tires. Does anyone think that the posie (If I'm correct on that) would tear up the axle with say 32"x10.5"?

Lockers don't snap D35's.  Side loading of the c-clips does.  Should be OK with 32" tires on a D35, posi or not.

What is side loading in this context?  Like on a side hill?

Side loading is off camber driving... or as you put it "on a side hill." lol.

So lets see...

$15-50 Steel Wheels  = $60-200
So that's $400-530 / 4 = 100-132.50 per tire

Since they are so wide, I suspect they are Bias Belted.  I guess it's a deal IF you really like those tires and that size.

25% of the NUBS does not mean there are 25% left.  Nubs aren't even a part of the tread and usually fall off quickly.  Sounds like there are less then 200 miles on them.

I say you're full of it.  :crap:

I have yet to see a D35 that snapped at the C-clip. Everyone says that's a weak point but every one I saw that snapped was where the splines met the solid surface of the shaft. Had nothing to do with the clips.

This is where they break, almost always caused by lifting a tire when locked and catching traction under throttle.

Don't believe me? Do a search on google images or photobucket for "dana 35" or "d35 shaft" look at where they break. no splines in any of the pics.....

The D35 breaks that I have seen in person were all axle ejections from the "button" on the end of the shaft snapping off.

Lockers don't snap D35's.  Side loading of the c-clips does.  Should be OK with 32" tires on a D35, posi or not.

Sounds like they break both ways, it is just a weak axle design.
