Regearing dana 30 and 8.8
« on: August 04, 2008, 08:31:50 AM »
When it comes to axle I'm lost like a goose in the fog. I have a 93 2.5L with 4.10 gears. I'm currently set up on a dana 30 front and dana 35 rear. I plan on getting a ford 8.8 within the nxt month. I would like to run 35" tires but run 33" now. I will be installing a NV 3550 in two weeks. My question are;

1) What ratio should I be running?

2) What all do I need, besides the ring and pinion? Also, where is the best place to get these items?

TIA

Well, 4.88 will be your limit with the D-30 (don't know what the limit on the 8.8 is).  I run 4.88's with 33.10.50's and it's ok but could be better.  I am piecing together a front D-44 to match my rear D-44 so that I can go 5.38.  The 4.88 aren't quiet enough on steep hills in 4hi and 4low was to low (even prior to the tera 4:1).  You'll need to get an istall kit too (bearings, shims and seals).  Your D-30 carrier will work but don't know about the 8.8.

Can you buy a carrier for the D30 that would be able to hold a higher gear like 5.13?

I dont know of anyone making any gears higher than 4.88 for the D30, and your current carrier would be the right one for 4.88...

Well...alright...scratch those plans. What would be a good axle that can hold 5.13?

D44's have 5.13 and do OK with 35's...  Not sure on the gears of the 8.8.

5.38 is a great gear for the 2.5 and 5spd and 35" tires.  Don't be stuck on an 8.8, d44 rear is a good option. Isuzu Rodeo d44 rear has disc brakes and 6lug to match Waggy d44 front.

What years would i need to look for d44's out of a rodeo and waggy?

Will I have to modify them much?

The Wagoneer switched from pass. side diff to driver's side sometime around 1980.

Both are great axles.  I used 1" spacers on my 'Zu rear d44 to get more width, to match the Waggy front.  I'll post some pics of my setup.
