2.5 with a AX-15

Iam thinking of upgrading to a AX-15. Has anyone done this? I have recked 2 AX-5's so far and don't want to get another one. I know AA sells a kit for this.

I doubt the 6-Speed will swap since that's a 2.4L specific transmission so finding a bellhousing for a 2.5L might not exist.

I did this basic swap except I went with a NV3550, instead of the ax-15, figured if I'm going to do the work I want the best tranny I can get.  The bell housing is easy just use a Dakota 4cyl 5spd bell housing bolts right up.  The clutch was the hardest thing, I used a stock preasure plate and a Dakota (I'll have to double check the year if you need it) clutch disc.  Only after market peice I needed was the pilot bushing from AA.  Every thing else was just a matter of pieceing together stock components.

I just installed the AX15 in my YJ a few weeks ago.
I highly recommend it!
Really, it's not too bad.
Just get all the parts you need, and a rent a tranny jack!
If you need to convert to an external slave, I have an extra front bearing retainer I'm looking to sell.

The 6 speed is the same for the 4 and 6 cyl engines

AW12345, would you develop that idea, please? I'm about to take my '00 2.5L down for complete rebuild and HAD thought I would install the 6-speed during reassembly, but had gotten the idea that that wasn't a workable prospect.

If it is an option, I'd be on that like white on rice.

DodgeMudder has the right right setup. The 6 spd has better gear splits from 2nd to 5th, but the NV3550 is stronger, has a better OD and will stand up to V8 power and 37" tires.

not to hi jack the thread but i am getting ready to do the ax 15 swap as well. i have acquired all the needed parts and just looking for time to do it. i was just curious as there was a few on here who have already done this swap....

did you have to alter the skid plate? if so what exactly did you do to it?

did you have to make any more room for the shifter? any body trimming to make the shifter fit?

did you bother with the inertia ring while you were in there?

 mine is a 95 so it is external slave already. i am under the impression that my stock  slave cylinder may be too short and a longer push rod will need to be fabricated...was this the case for anyone else?

I wouldn't say it's weak.  With 272 lb/ft Max Input torque, it's not a featherweight.  The NV3550 is 300lb/ft.

Still, it seems getting the CPS relocated is a PITA and you have to mix and match some of the clutch system to get it to fit.  You could probably save yourself a lot of time by buying a crank mounted CPS kit.  I forget who makes a 2.5L one.  The transmission is a lot taller and would require a body-lift or a willing to beat the floor into submission.
