This is a link to the oil filter section. Read thru some of the threads. Some say the Fram are crap and come apart, others say they have many thousands of miles on them with no problems.

Considering that forum is an oil/luberication forum of course it is going to have oil and filter sponcers.

One of my favorite consumer reports tests (1996)

Cliff notes - used many brands of oils in new york taxi cabs.  Brand and whether they were changed at 3K or 6K intervals didn't make any difference at all.

My other favorite test was when they refuted the BS claims of Amsoil and brought their findings to the FTC so that Amsoil would stop using ridiculously false claims in its commercials.

As I recall, their oil filter tests said to buy a Fram - mostly because it made no difference either and the Frams were cheaper.

What people seem to forget is that the various companies all meet the manufacturers spec, and being 2x better than what is required or 20x better is like running 93 octane in a motor that needs 89 octane - a waste of money that yields nothing for that money.

i used motorcraft bc i get them for free form work never had a problem and i like them, they have leak back valves in them, and we barly see them fail.

I also like the K&N filter. PN 2004. They have a 1 inch nut formed on the bottom of the filter to make it easy to remove.
Do you lube the rubber gasket with oil before installing?
If my filter wrench slip while trying to remove the filter I add a cardboard shim, by taking the filter box apart and tapeing to the wrench.

I'm partial to the syns. I am sure that Brand X dino would work fine as long as it meets the specs by the motor mfg. I don't run that many miles a year :'( so spending a bit over $30.00 on a oil change and filter is not that big of a deal.
Yup, I pull the seal and lube it up with the clean oil before installing.  For some reason I jsut don't have it tight enough.  I know I don't have two gaskets up there.

I too used the regular paper filters for the longest time.  Actually a lot of the people I know are doing the same since the K&N's allow a lot of dirt to pass thought the element.  Paper filters are cheap and work well.  Although now, I'm using the Fram Air Hog.

Bah, a jeep engine would be happy enough with no filter.  These are the same guys who think you have to run Amsoil or some other high dollar lube in everything including your garden tractor.

Been running Fram for the last 23 years and havn't had any issues.  If you are needing a filter wrench to remove a filter that was on for 3-5K miles you are putting it on too tight or need to have your carpel tunnel checked out :)

Same here, the wooded trails get good and dusty around here in the summer. No way I'd trust a K&N type.

I added a pre-filter to my K&N. I can't run the stock box since I moved the motor forward. Is there paper filters that a cone shaped?

I couldn't find a good way to seal it once the tube is cut. And at the time I didn't have time to monkey with it.
SMOG has not been a problem. Once the guy said he did not see a CARB  sticker on the intake tube, but he passed me.
The K&N with the pre-filter works, I was just wondering if there was a cone shaped paper one. I have not seen any, but I have not looked either.
When I did the 62mm TB swap I did not see any fine dust/powder on the inside of the tube. So I guess it's doing it's job.

You can run a TJ box and tube.  It sits on the passenger side.  That's what I run in my YJ that has the motor pushed 7" forward.  Put it in after I got sick of listening to the intake suck from the K&N cone.

Edited and added one.  Jeep works much better offroad with the weight as far forward as possible, also get a nice long driveshaft out of the deal.

Is the 2.5 and 4.0 the same tube on the TJ?

I hear ya. The only people I know that have moved there motor is to make room for a underdrive.
