What kind of AT tire do you guys recomend?
« on: May 18, 2009, 02:17:57 PM »
My wife needs larger tires on her JK unlimited.  I am thinking 265/75/16 (about 31x10.50) for size and definately AT's.  It needs to be a rugged looking tire but not a mud tire.  I prefer BFG AT's for performance and look but @ almost $200 a piece I was wondering if you guys have any other suggestions?

watch craigslist for some used bfg ats. I got 5 for 400 and still had the inner wear nipples on them. when I went to 33s I still got 250 for em and never had a leak or tire problem for 3 years. They are great in snow and rain. so far with my bfg mts I notice a huge diff in the rain exp in stopping. For the street bfg ats are the bomb

16" tires are expensive compared to 15's. (Those 265's cost as much as 35x12.5R15's KM2's!)  I'd go with the BFG KO's still.

You might try to find some take-offs but I doubt you'll have many choices in used 16".

Buddy of mine is running General Grabber MT's and really likes them, from what I've seen the seem to be pretty good, I've also heard the Micky ATZ's are a good choise, both options should be less than the BFG's.

I like the General Grabber at2. They are not on the jeep( it has BFG AT) they are on her kia serento.
I like them a lot, they have seen some dirt but more launch ramps then dirt. I will get those once the BFG are all worn out.

You can get the 31" BFG ATs for 16" wheels for $176 a piece plus shipping from Tire Rack.  But maybe you want to buy and install the same day and use a local tire dealer instead.

If she's driving on streets that see any rain, I'd say 31" versions of the Bridgestone Dueller AT Revos for their wet-weather traction.  These tires do also brake, handle and wear suprisingly well on dry pavement in my experience using them on a YJ.  No substitute for good MTs if off-road though.

I noticed some JKs apparently sold new wearing Dueller AT Revos from the factory; maybe that's the Wrangler's OEM tire now.  These Revos at 31"/16" wheels run $147 a piece + shipping at Tire Rack and they look pretty good -- but I wouldn't say they're an especially rugged looking design.  Of course you may already be using Revos and want to go with something else.

I ran General Grabber ATs years ago and really liked them... they are an aggressive looking AT that did well on the streets. They changed up a bit with the AT2s and they look a bit like the old BFG ATs

Mickey Thompson has several At that aggressive looking from the side with side biters and such. MTs are made by Cooper and are a good tire.

I ran the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor's and those are pretty good, not a lot of road noise from them, and in a 2wd pickup I never got stuck in the snow or mud and my dad just put these on his work truck and likes the way they handle also.  I would do these before I would do the BFG's and I think they are same price.

I have GY Wrangler AT/S on my F250 and it is helpless in snow and mud...surprising cuz it looked like a great snow tire. The GSAs are crap too...fwiw

bfg a/ts if you can swing it.  my mom has the general grabbers on her liberty and they are agressive, but if you forget to rotate them once you will have a lifetime of tire noise.  but they last pretty long.  i have bridgestone idk the a/ts on my tj now and they are pretty nice wear good havent really seen mudd but were good in snow

The silent armor's were looking pretty nice.  Is it possible that they are a different tire than what you had? There are so many different AT's.  They way out rank the reviews @ tireworld for the bfg's (which was shocking).  The goodyear AT Silent Armor's were #2 and the BFG KO's were #18?

Yeah I'm sure they were different ... I was just commenting on my experiences. I've had good luck with other GY tires such as the RT/S, and the Wrangler radial. I was just disappointed with the AT/S ,but, they may work fine for someone else.
