Really don't see why the C clip is such a big deal on the 8.8.

me either just one of the arguements against that i heard. i run an 8.8. just trying to give him an idea of what people say and how u could address those issues if it comes up

I think the 8.8 c-clip issue depends on tire size and engine power.  At some point even the 8.8 will break and even if the wheel does not fall off it could damage the brakes.  But then again, a D44 could also damage the bearing when an axle breaks if you roll out on it. I wish I had full floating axles like in my old GPW, only stronger of course.

It would take an extreme side load to break the c-clips and I've never seen it happen.  C-clips are not the cause of the d35 failures, it's the small diameter of the axleshaft where it necks down at the carrier.  C-clips have a bad rap but are not prone to problems.

I've never heard of a C-clip causing any problems.  It's always the axle shaft breaking.

my take on the clips being a "problem" was that when you did manage to break a shaft your wheel can work its way out from under the jeep. so it isn't realy a c-clip weakness as in straight but as having something to keep the axle in when broker...  but i guess unless you are full floating your kinda  :gimp: either way...

unless you have full floaters you are in trouble imo. you can limp your way around for a little bit but since the support point in the diff is gone that axle is going to be on an angle that would not be horizontal (and the wheel and disk would not be vertical or perpendicular to the axle tube) - the broken end would be supporting itself in the axle tube - i don't know how the 8.8 is built to make a statement about the disk keeping the axle in but once it's broken i don't see how you could safely drive back home even if it would be only 20 or 30 miles (and not damage something else like the diff, the housing or disk assuming you can make it there) not to mention that i would assume the disk would bet itself wedged on the caliper or the e-brake shoes and possibly even brake the caliper support

again this is just common sense assumption, never had an 8.8 so in reality could be different.

I'd stick with the 8.8 I feel it's stronger than the 10 bolt.

Well you carry spare shafts and a tool to knock the broken stub out, on a none c clip axle it actually doesn't really take all that long if you bring the right tools to git er done

Ive seen 3 D35's pop the axle end off at the C-clip groove. (One was mine...)

I've seen several ford trucks with 8.8 rears along side the road with the axle in the ditch...

AS far a 9" vs 8,8 vs 44. If you look up the specs they are within 1/8 of an inch of each other, the pinions are all within 3/10 of an inch.

Some 9"gear sets are 8.8 Some 9" have "small pinion" which is way smaller than a 44 or a 8.8.

None of them really beat the other in any all around comparison, each has a strength.

9" do suck more power than the 44 or the 8.8 due to the pinion relationship to the ring gear.

More and more drag racers are running Dana full floaters casue the 9 can suck up 10 HP..
