Jeep won't start
« on: October 05, 2009, 07:41:16 PM »
So my jeep ran out of gas the other day, so i pull over, walk to the gas station, buy a can and gas, put it in the jeep, and still no start. I noticed the fuel pump isn't priming. Is this for sure the fuel pump?

can you hear the pump?

do you have any pressure (you can carefully press the schraeder valve to check) or is anything coming out off the return?

are you sure you got enough gas in for it to start? and you may have clogged the fuel filter with crap from running it dry... but that wouldn't prevent it from priming as it would get up to pressure.. just not at the fuel rail (i could be wrong).

How long did you leave the pump on after it ran out of gas?

My first thought if the pump isn't running at all is to check the fuse, might have over heted the pump popping the fuse from it running w/ gas.  Otherwise I would say it's the pump.  (disregard all of this is you hear the pump come on at all when the key is first turned on)

Best way to check is check the fuel pressure at the rail.  First check is as simple as pressing the valve, and if fuel comes out, the pump is working.  On mine, there was nothing coming out when the fuel pump died on me...

Try pressing the accelerator while cranking.  I know it's fuel injected and you shouldn't need to, but it has worked for me in the past.

Alright  :brick:
SO i dropped the tank and replaced the fuel pump, in a college dorm parking lot, without a jack, and with about 5 gallons in the tank. Real fun.
Still no start, however the fuel pump is priming now
wtf?
fuel filter maybe?

Go through the paces;

Check that you have spark (careful not to shock yourself!)
Check that you have fuel pressure (at the rail)

I would bet it's one or the other...

Have you checked the fuel filter by any chance?  It may be clogged up, and if so, this could be why the pump was not priming (there was already pressure after the pump).

So i cracked the fuel line before the filter to see if i had pressure, and i dont. The pump is priming when i turn the key, but no fuel is coming through the line. I'm getting desperate. Any help would be great  :brick:
