E-Fan Swap
« on: October 25, 2009, 08:33:07 PM »
Ok, so i had to get a new radiator and serpentine belt. so what better time to do the E-Fan!

I bought and all aluminum radiator on-line.

Went to the local pick-a-part and for $2 admission and $33 for an E-Fan from a 95 Taurus V6 3.8L I was ready to go.

I have it set up with a 3 pos switch, a on-off-on so the switch is set to low and runs when the ignition is on. I can turn the high on if necessary. Here's some pics. Also put radiator guard in as well, looks good.

As you can see there is plenty off room for a V8 swap!

The fan is loud because of the amount of air it pushes, but even at idle on low you can't really hear it, high you can hear a little bit.

I have a soft top and can barely hear myself think so noise is no issue.

After a short drive The temp was already running about 200* instead of the normal 210*. I will see how much difference it makes after driving to work tommorrow.

I strongly recommend the Delta Current Control FK35; that and this fan are a match made in heaven!  This will help you lower the AMP draw and keep the engine temp lower.  It will also shut the fan off while driving at highway speed (IE when it is not needed, which means that more HP are freed up!)

what is this solenoid used for in your setup?

i need one for my second battery - where did you get this one, how many amps is it rated at and what was the price if you don't mind me asking?

thanks in advance

Honestly, you don't need the HI speed.  Even guy's with V8's aren't using them.  I can hear my low speed clearly when stopped at a light.  It kind of sounds like I've got my heater on low.  I do recommend installing a thermostatic switch of some sort though.

Eh, I have no problems with my $26 Flex-A-lite thermostatic switch.  It works and is cheap.  If you have your relay setup properly, it's easy to set up.  Not only that but it's easily bypassed if something happens to go wrong (KISS).  The DCC is nice but in the spirit of keeping this project cheap and obtainable for everyone, I'd go with the inexpensive option.  I think I have less then $50 invested in my fan setup.

I will find a thermo static switch where did you get yours Jeff?

That relay is a Ford starter relay it was $12 at napa I think it's rated for 80amps. here is a link to another write-up I used along with Jeff's and he used this along with a Bosch 40amp relay. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f13/ford-taurus-two-speed-e-fan-install-pics-233676/

i wonder is a fan shroud will make it work even better?

I did notice a little more pep at take off.

I carpooled today so didnt get to test it out today, but i will drive it tommorrow to see how much it helps.

summit racing has some of those adjustable ones last time i checked

the point with the e-fan is to save power when you don't need the fan to spin to provide airflow (e.g. when the vehicle is moving at over 30mph or so) - if you spin it continuously you are in fact using power from the motor to generate electricity (by the means of your alternator) so that kinda defeats the purpose - so like Jeffy said, get a thermostatic switch and you'll save gas as well as gaining power.

to give you an example, if your fan draws 50 amps then the power consumed by the alternator is 14V*50A=900W transform that into HP (1000W =1.34HP) you will waste 1.2HP (and the associated gas that goes with it) - the numbers in your case are probably different but you get the idea.

I bought a Flex-A-lite off Amazon.com since they have free shipping.  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00029J3ZW.  It's basic but it gets the job done.

You already have a fan shroud.  That's the big black thing you bolted to the radiator.

I mean one like the stock.

still, you don't need one - the reason they made it that long (huge) is b/c they needed to surround the mech fan so it can pull thru the rad fins, otherwise would have just moved air around the engine and not thru the rad - there is no other purpose for that stock shroud, the one that came with your e-fan is exactly what is needed. you can use that space for other goodies :) or just enjoy the view of the front axle from up top
