Topic: Relay kit for Taurus fan...

Why do some other sites say to use a 75 or 80 amp relay??  I want to run out now at lunch and pick up the stuff so I can swap this out this weekend.  I would like to add an on/off switch in the cab as well so I can shut it off for water crossings.

i think that's for high speed. i didn't use the Taurus but other guys here are saying that the 40amp is sufficient for the low speed.

So...I'm looking to wire it up...but also have a cutoff switch in the cab....there are a million write-ups for this mod.

Guess I'll hit NAPA tomorrow as CarQuest nearby didn't have an adjustable thermometric switch.

there was a thread in which i posted some diagrams with the cutoff switch but it also had an override on relay - let me know if you can't find it and i can post them again.

If I wanted to add an override switch for mine, would it best best to hook it into the hot lead from the battery or the keyed ignition wire?

And Mozman- if you find the Hayden kit or something similar, it's super easy to install. No different than wiring up a stereo really

I just went ahead and ordered the DC Control 2-speed kit.  Once I get that and get it hooked up, I'll figure out the toggle switch for inside the cab....should just be able to interrupt the 12v supply wire with a switch and relay.

Key +12v unless you like fires.  You don't run high amp loads through the dash.

Since the battery power is going through the relay to the fan, can't I just run a switch directly into that same relay??  Like i probably did for my KC Hilighters??

yes, but what jeffy was saying is to put the switch on the solenoid side and not on the high current side of the relay (the 12v that controls the relay and not the 12v feed that powers the fan). the reason is that you will need a switch rated at 40 amps in that case and really there's no reason for having it on that part of the circuit (you will use switched 12v anyway for the control/command side of the relay)

Yep..."30" part of relay to battery (with fuse in between)

"86" side to switch with a ground coming off the switch and a supply line coming from a keyed source so the fan is off when I turn the ignition off.

Other side of relay ( "85?") to a thermostat

"87" to low level fan wire.

Actually...scratch that...the DC Control unit will take care of 90% of this...I just need to run the switch between their blue and/or yellow wires...sending them a note to ask what the best way is....

That would be yellow as blue is for AC.

Just wondering....  Wouldn't the Taurus have a usable relay that could be pulled along with the fan?

it probably has - but you need to know where it is and still need the thermocouple and harness (in case is not electronic).

Thanks.  Sounds like the Hayden kit is good way to do it with no hassle.
