yj brake lines
« on: July 30, 2010, 11:17:15 AM »
so i started taring my 1990yjs dana 30 apart to install the locker i got and found that my brake lines where rubbing on the tires and need replacement... problem being the parts store can't get them in for a week and the dealer wants $800 for the pair.. i already looked at the faqs and found the brake line extension thread that says you can also use 87 chevy p20 van lines for a 4inch extension but looking at pictures online those appear to have a male end at the hard line and the jeep ones are female at the hard line... has anyone used other "more common" brake lines that fit with little modification / tell me that the picture was wrong...

Just run stock '95 YJ brake lines and move the hardline down a little on the frame.  Use a ziptie loosely between the brakeline and the shock to hold it off the tire.

ill use that ziptie suggestion but the line is too far gone to reuse and don't want to wait a week.. and with how rusty my brake lines look i don't really want to have to been them (i know if im saying that i should probably replace them but that's another project... ).. anyways found a writeup about using chevy 1500 lines and the parts store has them so ill give them a try tonight... and they are supposed to be 3 inches longer which should help with the lift...

I use part SP8439 at CarQuest, retail 45$ each.  You can probably find a better price if you look arround.  Line come with 2 copper washers and a retaining clip.

Other part numbers:

- Auto Sense: BH177760
- Wagner: 116846
- Midas: 2201
- Auto Spec: 86043
- Bendix: 77760

- NAPA #38620

 Tech info:

 - Stock TJ lines are 18" long ( TJ use left and right brake lines ... ie they are mirror and have a different part number )

- 1995 YJ brake lines are 4" longer and would work on TJs !

- 95 YJ are 22" long

- After market lines are 24" long

- 1/2" Ton Chevy 25" long ( Only one model, no left and right )

You only have one parts store in town?  If that's the case then go ahead and use Chevy lines.

got the chevy lines and ziptied to the shock to keep away form the tire.. nice having longer lines now... ended yup having to replace the drivers side hard line because it decided to break rather than unscrew from the hose... also had to get a new caliper because the bleeder was seized and broke off  :brick:.. but now the jeep is finally on the road again (going to bighorns jeep jamboree end of august).. and as suggested by soemone of this forum a year or so ago a powertrax no slip for a dana 35will fit in the dana 30 (kinda)..  only difference (that we saw) was in the cross pin, its a hair shorter (would still work) and the hole for the rollpin to retain it is smaller, this is the problem since its hardened so we couldn't drill it out and had to use the stock pin.. we will see how long it lasts.  :weee:
