Flowmaster 40 with a turn down
« on: October 20, 2010, 01:48:53 PM »
Soo, as it turns out my exhaust system after the cat is rusty and now spurting leaks spraying exhaust and water all over the place. To fix/upgrade this I was shopping around for a good cat-back to bolt on in it's stead but was overwhelmed by the idea of a 500 dollar muffler and tail pipe  :brick:.  So I was thinking about just buying a flow 40 and bolting that on with a turn down....will deafness ensue?  What should I expect from such a system? And will it be completely illegal?

Go with a stainless exhaust.  Something like a Borla will pay for it self if it ever breaks again.

I used to run a turn-down with no problems.

So it won't be deafening?   Will a lot of fumes get in cabin tho?

It's gonna be louder than if it ran all the way to the back. If Flowmaster is the brand you want get a 50. They are not as loud as the 40. Not sure on the fumes thing. I know people that run a turn down and they are still alive. Personally I don't think it makes that much of a difference.

You'll probably smell the exhaust while sitting at lights with the side windows down.  Driving it probably won't be an issue.  Noise would be a bit louder then if you ran the exhuast all the way back as well.  Performance-wide you'll probably lose some low end torque as you're really changing the length of the exhaust, the back pressure and the pulse wave change with it.

If you ever ran with the soft top rear window out won't be any worse then that.

Yes I have, but I'm just going to get a new pipe anyway, the 2.5 liter stock diameter is 2.25 inches right? I was just going to buy a direct fit pipe, reuse the stock hanging locations and use an extension, does anyone know where I can find the piece of pipe between the cat and the muffler?

i didn't think there is one (can't remember to be honest) - i think it's a slip fit (the muffler input slip into the cat output). If it isn't so then measure both ends and see what adapter you need (i think it's 2-1/4ID to 2-1/4ID but not sure). Napa or equivalent should carry them.

There isn't.  it's a slip joint on the cat and muffler.  Now if you cut off the muffler then you've shortened the output on the cat and will need to have an adapter made.

I can't speak to the noise level of the flowmaster but I never had a fume problem with my turn-down.

BTW: Jeep recommend against opening just the rear window.  They recommend if you want to open the rear window you should open the side windows as well.  It's in the Owners Manual.  At minimum you could have the front windows open and the vent open as well.

It doesn't really matter where the exhaust is coming out, it will get sucked into the low pressure spot behind the Jeep and get sucked into the passenger compartment if the other windows aren't open.

I'm not cutting anything so that makes my life much much easier
