Washed engine compartment...now I got problems
« on: October 26, 2010, 02:27:16 AM »
drove it right after I washed it...no problems...a couple hours later...started it up....rpm's went right up to 2g's...and check engine light came on...idle goes up and down...spudders between 2-3'gs when driving...feels like loss of power...disconnected the battery overnite...next morning hooked it up...no check engine light...seem to run fine...drove it a little no problem...a few hours later...started it...idle went up...check engine light came back on...and we are going through the same motions once again....any clues???

I believe is was P0122 and P0123...if I remember correctly....something to do with the TPS low and high voltage?

then it should be the tps, do you have a spare? easy to swap for a test and by the way you describe it makes sense as far as behavior goes.

I would check the connector to the TPS. It may have gotten water in it and is now shorting or corroding. I had a Neon where a lot of troubles came from green conductors inside the connectors. Use a blow-dryer if it looks wet inside.

Clean up the TPS and reconnected.  If that does not work, replace it (it's VERY easy, and IIRC, not that expensive).

unless it was hacked those connectors are weather tight so they should not let water in (well, unless the jet was right on it) - doesn't hurt to try though, some dielectric grease would also keep it from corroding in the future.

i did the same thing and had the same problem but mine cleared up by itself after running it a bit. turned out a little bit of water had gotten on the number 3 plug or wire. started doing fine after it dried up and have had no problem since

Keep the old sensor and let it dry out for a few days then see if it works.  If it does then keep it as a spare.  Typically, water is not a problem unless you're using a pressure washer.  Although, some hoses do have narrow nozzles.  If you're worried then take some plastic bags and over areas where you have to spray close to electronics.

I ussually get a CEL when  clean my engine; last time, it was the 02 sensor voltages acting up, but they cleared themselves up...
